Packing is a very important but, let’s face it, very annoying part of going away. The good news? Your clothes, shoes, and electronics can usually be tucked into a suitcase or carry-on bag without any fuss. Skincare, however, is a totally different story. 

From breakable glass bottles and leaky tubes to the sheer volume of the rotating products you like to keep on hand to address different skin concerns, successfully condensing your regimen for a few days or weeks away can feel daunting. In order to find out what parts of your skincare routine are worthy of taking on your trip and what products can stay home, we tapped two top skincare experts for their insider advice. 

## **Skincare Products to Travel With** 
First things first: Regardless of how short or long your normal skincare routine is, there are a few products that should be classified as non-negotiable. “If you pack like I do (i.e. 24 outfits for a four-day trip), then you might think that you’ll need to bring everything but the kitchen sink,” quips Katrina Moreno Lewis, founder of [Kura Skin](https://www.kuraskin.com/). “But, in reality, you’ll just need a handful of musts.” 

So, what makes the must-have list?

Basically, you’ll want to embrace the [‘skinimalism’ trend](https://aedit.com/aedition/skinimalism-skincare-trend). “If this trio looks familiar, that’s because these are the same core elements that you should be reaching for on a daily basis,” Lewis shares. “Keeping those core daily elements consistent as you travel can be a very good idea.”

As for those skincare extras — like serums and treatments — Lewis says you should consider the number of times you actually plan to use the product and what you intend to use it for. For example, “if you find that using your exfoliant three times a week predictably helps keep your skin clear, then it should go in the bag,” Lewis notes.

## **Skincare Products to Leave at Home**
As for what you can skip, avoid products that have the potential to aggravate or irritate your skin. “Traveling is actually quite stressful for your skin,” says Krupa Koestline, clean cosmetic chemist and founder of [KKT Consultants](https://www.kktconsultants.com/contact). “When your skin is stressed, avoid using too many harsh skincare actives and exfoliants.” That includes [retinoids](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-vitamin-a-retinol-retinoids-in-skincare), [exfoliating toners](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-at-home-chemical-peels-exfoliators), and even clay masks. “Focus instead on calming and soothing products,” she shares. “If you break out while on vacation, just use a clay mask when you're back home to refresh your skin a bit.”

For those that need to be conscious of luggage weight requirements or limited space in a carry-on, Lewis says you should opt for multitaskers. “If you’re flying only with a carry-on, you may have to make a few trade-offs,” she notes. “In these cases, what I typically leave behind are things like sheet masks, which fall into the ‘nice-to-have’ category.” In keeping with Koestline’s calming and soothing advice, Lewis likes to pack a hydrating serum and [facial oil](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-face-oil-for-all-skin-types). “That combination allows for more layering options and flexibility while on the go,” she shares.

Lewis also cautions that your girls’ trip is not the time to experiment. “This is not the best time to introduce products that you’ve never used before,” she says. “And it’s just about the worst time to swap your whole routine for those miscellaneous little sample packets you’ve been squirreling away.” Koestline agrees, noting that it’s best to “avoid anything new to your skin [while traveling], as it may cause you to react because your skin will be more sensitive than usual.”

## **Skincare Products to Add While Traveling**
As we mentioned earlier, the [stress](https://aedit.com/aedition/impact-of-stress-on-skin-acne-wrinkles-dryness) of traveling can affect your skin. As such, you may decide to add a few products to your travel skincare routine to offset the dryness and irritation that can arise when you’re away from home. This is especially an issue when flying. “The essential key to maintaining your skin during travel is moisturizing,” Koestline says. “Airplane rides and air pollution dry your skin out, so the best way to combat this is to keep your skin hydrated.”

As for the ever-popular sheet masks and face mists that many influencers and content creators post about using before take off? This “plumps the skin from within, minimizing those fine lines that make our foundation settle into creases, and adding glow from the inside out, making us look more flawless and airbrushed with or without makeup,” Dr. Liotta explains.

But Volite isn’t the only filler finding fans abroad. “There are fillers that are used for skin quality that are thinner and more superficial than the ones we have here, such as Volite, and one that is heavier than Voluma called Volux that is used for the chin and jawline,” says [Jennifer Levine, MD](https://drjenniferlevine.com/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in NYC. There are also combinations of a calcium-based filler combined with  hyaluronic acid filler (think: mixing Radiesse® with HA) in the pipeline. Overseas, it is common to use hyper-diluted syringes of collagen-boosting fillers, like [Radiesse® and Sculptra®](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers), all over the body, she notes. 

On the [neurotoxin](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) front, Dr. Levine mentions a longer-lasting botulinum toxin from Revance (it lasts six months instead of the typical three to four) and a short-acting one called Bonte that takes effect within 24 hours (instead of three to five days) and lasts only two or three weeks as exciting innovations. 

## **2. Rib Removal Surgery**
When it comes to aesthetic plastic surgery, the goal is always to help people look and feel their best. “We try to be part of the wellness journey,” says [Ryan Neinstein, MD](https://neinsteinplasticsurgery.com/), a New York-based board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. [Safety, morality, and ethics](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-plastic-surgeons-balance-patients-cosmetic-surgery-desires-and-safety) are all things that are taken seriously in this industry, but he’s noticed a recent surge of patients who have undergone dramatic and questionable procedures. 

Case in point: Rib removal surgery. “This procedure is dramatic and risks for it go the level of severe heart and lung injury and perhaps death,” he warns. While rib manipulation may be part of reconstructive procedures, it’s not meant to be done for purely cosmetic reasons. “Removing and altering ribs is a part of many reconstructive procedures where the bone or cartilage is used to reconstruct deficits from trauma, infection, or cancer,” Dr. Neinstein explains. Understandable are risks becoming tolerated given the trade-off in reconstruction, but “simply removing ribs in effort of decreasing one's chest or waist in clothing remains questionable,” he says. 

## **3. High-Definition Liposuction**
On the positive side, Dr. Neinstein says that [high-definition liposuction](https://aedit.com/aedition/high-definition-liposuction-techniques-for-body-contouring) is on the rise. “A procedure born out of South American ingenuity has permeated Park Avenue,” he says. Most of Dr. Neinstein’s patients are in search of a lean look, and his practice’s devices and techniques now allow for muscle definition. “By using artistic skill with our technology, we can now melt the fat down to just a few cells under the skin,” he explains. “For athletic patients with a great underlying muscular framework, we can now create a hill and valley concept that gives a sexy and athletic look.”

## __Why Do Patients Travel For Procedures?__
First things first, it's important to understand why and how medical tourism destinations have come to exist. According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the [United States performs more surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures](https://www.isaps.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/ISAPS_2017_International_Study_Cosmetic_Procedures_NEW.pdf) than any other country in the world. In 2017, the organization reports that there were nearly 4.5 million procedures performed, representing about 18 percent of the global total. While it should come as no surprise then that the United States welcomes a large contingent of foreign patients annually, plenty of Americans choose to leave the U.S. for aesthetic treatments and surgical procedures in different countries.

[Patients Beyond Borders reports](https://www.patientsbeyondborders.com/media) that the global medical tourism market is growing at a rate of 15 to 25 percent, and cosmetic surgery tops the list of specialities medical travelers are most interested in. The organization, which specializes in medical tourism, estimates nearly two million Americans traveled abroad for healthcare in 2019.

## __What to Consider Before Traveling Abroad for Cosmetic Surgery?__
Sure, cost savings and the allure of new technologies can be appealing, but patients should be cautious when seeking medical treatment in a foreign country. The potential risks of traveling abroad for cosmetic surgery are multiple and varied, says Beverly Hills-based board certified plastic surgeon [Johnson Lee, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/johnson-lee-md-710). And while it is possible to receive quality care around the world, patients should take the necessary precautions before opting for medical travel.
 
1. __Safety First__: Needless to say, safety should always be your top priority when seeking treatment both domestically or abroad. Researching how cosmetic procedures are regulated in other countries, what the education and certification process is for doctors and surgeons, and how medical centers and international hospitals function can help to ensure the proper safety protocols are in place.

2. __Do Your Homework__: If a procedure is not FDA-approved in the U.S., you may want to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist prior to traveling to understand the potential safety risks of the treatment or technique. Viewing before and after photos and asking to speak to local patients who have undergone the procedure can provide additional insight into what to expect.

Ever since the [silicone implant scandal](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3676226/) involving French manufacturer Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP) in the early 2000s and the more [recent recall of Allergan's textured breast implants](https://aedit.com/aedition/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-allergan-breast-implant-recall), patients are increasingly aware of the need to discuss implant safety prior to surgery. This is especially true abroad, as clinical testing, medical standards, and regulation varies by country. 

“The FDA in the United States is particularly stringent. Most larger companies with FDA-approved implants and medications in the United States will have the exact same or similar products abroad,” says Dr. Lee, who encourages patients to ask their surgeons in other countries what types of products they use. If you are uncomfortable with what is offered, consult with another provider. The same due diligence is necessary for medical devices (think: lasers and body sculpting treatments), too.

### __4. Post-Op Travel Concerns__ 
Long-distance travel soon after surgery is one of the biggest differences in the recovery from a procedure carried out locally versus abroad. Surgeons who regularly operate on patients traveling from another country often have tried and tested protocols in place that will dictate when and how you will be allowed to travel home to prevent injury and complications.

“With air travel, you may be expected to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time or carry heavy luggage. This can be harmful to your surgical sites, in addition to being uncomfortable," Dr. Lee explains. "One of the most serious risks of flying is developing a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This is usually a blood clot that forms in the calf area of the legs and happens because of prolonged sitting and poor circulation. Blood clots can travel through your vessels and cause damage to the lungs and even death.”

Ideally, patients would travel with a companion who can help navigate the post-op process and return trip home. Coordinating with your airline can also help to get you through the airport with less walking and standing. Regardless, Dr. Lee says surgeons should be able to provide "exercises and tips" that will help minimize the risks, "if you are traveling shortly after surgery."

### __5. Recovery and Aftercare__ 
With many procedures, patient care during the recovery process is as crucial to a good outcome as success in the OR. One of the biggest risks of having surgery in another country is the potential lack of follow-up care. Dr. Lee advises that patients try to find a doctor close to home who is willing to help them through the recovery process, if they do choose to have surgery abroad.

Scar revision, for example, is a common request of patients returning to the U.S. after having a cosmetic procedure abroad. The scarring can be due to the stress put on the surgical site while traveling home, poor post-op care, or doctor error. Larger revision or corrective surgeries (which are both financially and physically costly) may also be needed if patients are unhappy with their results.

To avoid such disappointments, make sure you ask your surgeon to outline their standard recovery practices (including when normal activity can resume and what symptoms to be on the lookout for) and how they can be carried out when you return home.

## __For Patients Traveling to the U.S. for Cosmetic Surgery__ 
Just as Americans looking to travel abroad for cosmetic surgery should take all of the potential concerns and risks outlined above into consideration, patients planning to come to the U.S. for treatment should exercise similar care.

You will want to discuss how long you will need to remain in the country after the procedure for follow-up appointments and when it will be safe to travel long distances again. Additionally, be equipped with a list of medications and supplements you currently take and any relevant medical records to ensure things operate as smoothly as possible.

There is a reason the global men’s grooming industry grew to [$60.6 billion in 2018](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/global-male-grooming-products-market-set-to-reach-81-2-billion-by-2024---analysis-by-product-price-range-distribution-channel-and-region-300883497.html) and is set to balloon even more (it is estimated to rise to $81.2 billion by 2024); men are much bigger consumers of beauty and grooming than people give them credit for. That extends to cosmetic procedures as well. According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), [men made up 14.4 percent of all global cosmetic surgical procedures in 2017](https://www.isaps.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/ISAPS_2017_International_Study_Cosmetic_Procedures_NEW.pdf). And while they don’t break down gender divisions in individual countries, it’s clear that men are increasingly seeking out cosmetic procedures the world over.

But what these men are looking for varies by country. Much like women’s standards of beauty, what men aspire to look like has a lot to do with the culture they’re living in and is closely tied to their societal understanding of masculinity. In 2016, [UK-based Superdrug launched a “Perceptions of Perfection” study](https://onlinedoctor.superdrug.com/perceptions-of-perfection-part-ii-men/?utm_source=affiliatewindow&utm_medium=affiliate) that invited freelancers from around the world to alter a photo of a man to reflect the ‘ideal male’ of their culture. The results are, unsurprisingly, varied but do show that “men suffer equally with women around low body confidence as many strive to attain a standard of ‘attractiveness’ that is both often unattainable and driven by cultural perceptions and advertising ideals,” as the study notes. 

Understanding the [subtle differences in the male ideal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC7P-p0dPoI) around the world can shed a light on the global perception of masculinity and why more men are seeking out cosmetic procedures than ever before. Here, The AEDITION speaks with leading experts to find out what men are looking for in five regions around the globe.

## **1. Middle East**

In recent years, the Middle East has become a global plastic surgery hub, particularly Lebanon, Dubai, and Turkey. Some credit social media and western influence with this rise, but a decreasing cultural stigma around cosmetic work has also contributed to an increase in both procedures and medical tourism. Some estimate that as much as [30 percent of patients seeking cosmetic surgery are men](https://www.arabnews.com/node/1442116/saudi-arabia).

According to a [2017 study in the Saudi Medical Journal](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5556282/), the most common cosmetic procedures were [rhinoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/ethnic-rhinoplasty) and [laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal). While they do not note how many of these procedures were performed on men, it’s in line with what experts see. “In the Middle East, rhinoplasty is number one,” says Beverly Hills-based board certified plastic surgeon [Leif Rogers, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/leif-rogers-md-578). It’s becoming more common not only in the Middle East itself, but also among people of Middle Eastern descent in the U.S., he says.

“They don’t necessarily want a Western looking nose,” New York City board certified plastic surgeon [Douglas Steinbrech, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/douglas-steinbrech-md-62), is quick to note. Instead, the ideal is a defined nose that still is culturally appropriate. “They may want it to be reduced, but to keep it within the bell-shaped curve that is the norm of their culture,” he says.

The Middle East is also rapidly becoming known as a hub for [hair transplants](https://aedit.com/procedure/neograft), especially in Turkey. It’s estimated that Turkey alone has more than 300 hair transplant clinics and has seen men flock from all over the world to have hair treatments. In a culture that has traditionally valued full beards and heads of hair, it’s unsurprising that hair-focused procedures are popular in the region. Couple that with an interest in manscaping (as seen through the amount of laser hair removal procedures) and it’s clear that hair is a defining factor in male beauty in the Middle East.

## **2. South America**
When you think about South American aesthetics, it’s impossible to overlook Brazil, which leads the charge in both beauty ideals and plastic surgery. Procedures like the [Brazilian Butt Lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift) have cemented Brazil as the gold-standard in body definition — not just for women but for men too.

Men in Brazil idealize a toned, athletic body but not overly muscular. “They’re all about big-time definition,” says Nashville-based board certified plastic surgeon [Jacob Unger, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jacob-unger-md-2649), of Maxwell Aesthetics. It’s telling that [four of the top five most popular plastic surgery procedures](https://www.isaps.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/ISAPS_2017_International_Study_Cosmetic_Procedures_NEW.pdf) in Brazil are focused on the body, with [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-assisted-liposuction) and [abdominoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) top among them. Dr. Steinbrech also notes that he’s seen an increase in interest in other procedures among men in Brazil. “They do a lot of [gluteal augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/butt-augmentation-with-implants) and are very interested in implants,” he explains.  

While the ISAPS does not note how many men in Brazil underwent these surgeries versus women, given that Brazil is considered a plastic surgery capital around the world (thanks to inexpensive and accessible providers) it is not a stretch to assume that men are taking advantage to obtain their perfect beach body.

## **3. South Korea**
South Korea is a beauty-obsessed culture that has distinct ideas of beauty for both women and men. “Korea really sets the standards across Asia,” says Dr. Steinbrech. Look no further than the now-worldwide K-beauty trend to see that aesthetic trends often start there and soon have global implications. Men in South Korea are much more in tune with [skincare](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-grooming-ingredients-for-men) and makeup than men in other parts of the world and typically undergo cosmetic procedures like [jaw surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/jawline-slimming-with-botox) and rhinoplasty to attain their desired look.

Dr. Steinbrech says K-Pop and the [Flower Boy](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-42499809) aesthetic are the driving influences in South Korean aesthetics for men. “It’s a more androgynous feel where men want to have more delicate faces like a narrow jawline and a more pointed chin,” he explains. Unlike other parts of the world where stronger male features are preferred, South Korean men want a more stylized look that’s focused on their face and is even sometimes at odds with a more muscular body, according to Dr. Steinbrech. Similar to women, larger eyes are considered beautiful in men, but [double eyelid surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/asian-blepharoplasty) (during which a Western-inspired crease in the eyelid is created) is very common as well, he says. 

To obtain more ‘delicate’ features many men turn to elaborate skincare routines and makeup, but there is a reason South Korea is considered one of the plastic surgery capitals of the world. In Seoul alone, there are [hundreds of plastic surgery clinics](https://www.academia.edu/18248718/The_dubious_enhancement_Making_South_Korea_a_plastic_surgery_nation), and, unlike in the United States, the most common procedures focus on the face and are considered ‘minor’ procedures. Double eyelid surgery is one, but so is double jaw surgery (to sculpt the jaw and augment the chin to create the desired V-shape) and rhinoplasty (to create a smaller, more delicate nose). These procedures are just as common for men as they are for women.

## **4. United Kingdom**

In recent years, male aesthetic ideals in the United Kingdom have shifted, some say as a result of the popularity of reality shows like *Love Island*, which features very fit women and men in various states of undress. *Love Island*, specifically for it’s constantly rotating cast of ripped, shirtless men, [has been said to be linked to an increase in anabolic steroid use and male body image disorders](https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/love-island-2019-is-the-reality-show-affecting-male-body-image_uk_5cf61f85e4b0a1997b702181?guccounter=1).

Whether that is true or not, it’s clear that men in the United Kingdom are much more focused on their bodies and desire a toned, muscular physique. The ideal man is muscular, athletic, and heavily tattooed (the UK has emerged as one of the most tattooed nations), and while plastic surgery is less common for men than in other parts of the world, Dr. Steinbrech has seen this start to change. “The Brits are more conservative in general, but [UK patients] are starting to get more into body procedures,” he shares. “They’re starting to ask for them and it’s becoming a trend.”

According to the [British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons](https://baaps.org.uk/about/news/1708/cosmetic_surgery_stats_number_of_surgeries_remains_stable_amid_calls_for_greater_regulation_of_quick_fix_solutions), men in the UK are opting for non-invasive procedures like [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/periorbital-botox) more frequently than surgical procedures. But while that may be the case when it comes to facial procedures, liposuction rose among men by 9 percent in 2018, further cementing the United Kingdom as an increasingly body-obsessed culture. 

## **5. USA**

“American [men] want to be tan and jacked like a Marine or a superhero,” says Dr. Steinbrech. “Basically, they want to look more like Thor.” But nailing down the aesthetic ideals of American men isn’t so easy. A lot of it has to do with where they live, at least according to Dr. Steinbrech. “There is a tendency with people (including men) in Los Angeles to want to look younger,” he says. “In California, people are rewarded for being fit, going to the gym, and appearing more youthful. They’re more likely to want to look very young and fit even into their sixties.” In other areas, like New York, he says men tend to be more focused on how their looks can make them more effective at their jobs. “In New York, they want a [big jawline](https://aedit.com/aedition/8-ways-to-get-a-more-defined-jawline)” because men equate that with confidence, leadership, and magnetism, he explains. 

Despite the subtle differences in geography, a peek at the top cosmetic procedures among men does shed some light. Liposuction and [gynecomastia](https://aedit.com/procedure/male-breast-reduction) surgery (a.k.a. male breast reduction) are common and men look to these procedures to obtain a more toned, fit shape. Rhinoplasty and [blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/blepharoplasty-eyelid-surgery) (i.e. eyelid surgery) are also common, showing that men do seek to improve their facial features, though Dr. Steinbrech adds that the goals of these procedures among men is to make small, subtle tweaks that are not always noticeable. Still the most common cosmetic procedure of all is non-invasive Botox® (or other neuromodulators) and dermal fillers, which help men look youthful without surgery.

Whether it’s through non-invasive procedures or cosmetic surgery, the most common thing providers hear from their male patients is that they don’t want to look too 'done.' Men in the United States still often associate a certain ruggedness with a male ideal — a muscular body, a strong jaw, and a few (but not too many) lines on their faces. Perfection, in many ways, is considered feminine, but strength is masculine.

Understanding the differences in the ideal male aesthetic around the world can shed a light on why more men are seeking out cosmetic procedures than ever before. Here, The AEDITION investigates what guys are looking for around the globe.

*From that French girl je ne sais quoi to the intricacies of the multi-step Korean skincare routine, the international cosmetic and aesthetic industries are as vast as they are unique. But, thanks to globalization, niche trends now have universal appeal. When the four Polla sisters were growing up in Geneva, Switzerland, their dermatologist father, Dr. Luigi Polla, didn’t mind much if they stayed out late at night with friends or at a bar. Forgetting to wear sunscreen, however, was another story. “We would never get in as much trouble with him as when we got a sunburn,” says Ada Polla, the eldest sister. “That was pretty much the worst thing that we could do. He was always very particular about how we treated our skin. It was part of our education, if you will.”

A lifetime of safe sun habits was not the only thing that made an impression on the sisters. All four are now involved in one or more of the family businesses. There’s the skincare line, [Alchimie Forever](https://www.alchimie-forever.com/); a medical practice and spa, [Forever Institut](https://www.forever-beauty.com/fr/), in Geneva; and a newer store concept geared towards millennials, [Forever Boutique](https://www.forever-boutique.ch/), in Lausanne. “We all worked with him throughout our childhood,” says Ada. “I started at 10, helping with filing and the front desk.” 

Today Ada, 41, is the CEO of Alchimie Forever, which she runs from Washington, D.C. Cyrille, 39, is director of communications and marketing of Forever Institut and Forever Boutique; Rachel, 36, is CEO for both. And Roxane, 30, helped to launch Forever Boutique last fall but is currently focused on her fellowship in vascular surgery at the University Hospital in Lausanne. 

They are all proactive in their personal routines, but they have learned from their father that the key to amplifying one’s own beauty is in not overdoing it. “You would never see a patient of his and say anything like, 'Wow, your lips look amazing. Who do you go to?'” says Ada. “His approach to beauty is for the long term, not in making dramatic or drastic changes. It’s about small, incremental improvements that you will notice, but everyone else will just think that you look gorgeous.” Among his signature treatments is the Softlift Forever, a [liquid facelift](https://aedit.com/procedure/liquid-facelift) technique using hyaluronic acid fillers to lift, contour, and sculpt the face.

While his patients at the Forever Institut on the Rue du Rhône in Geneva tend to be over 40, he noticed a new “beauty attitude” among the younger generation and encouraged his daughters to create a space more tailored to their needs. “The idea that women today, but men as well, they want it all,” says Cyrille. “They want medical aesthetics, but they want natural results. They want to have an active career but they also want to take care of themselves and for their well being. They want accessibility and, at the same time, luxury and high service.” 

With this insight, and inspired by trends from the United States (from blow dry-only hair salons like Dry Bar to the limited laser offering at Skin Laundry), the Polla sisters opened Forever Boutique in Lausanne last fall. “The idea,” says Rachel, “is to enhance, not transform.” 

Everything at Forever Boutique is geared toward the patient who is being proactive about her skin before she notices major changes and who is committed to taking care of it for the long haul. She wants services that are preventative, quick, and done in a professional but casual environment. 

There are six categories to choose from: Lips, Look ([botulinum toxin injections](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial)), Complexion ([peels](https://aedit.com/procedure/tca-peel)), Skin ([microneedling](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling) and [micro-injections of hyaluronic acid](https://aedit.com/procedure/permanent-lip-fillers)), Makeup, and [Lasers](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonablative-nonfractional-lasers). All injectables are performed by doctors, while other treatments are done by aestheticians and nurses. Each service comes in a “lightweight” and “intense” version. “Bo-Look,” for example, offers far fewer units and a more subtle improvement with Botox®, while “Bo-Top” more closely resembles a standard botulinum toxin treatment.

The most notable option, which is unique to the practice, is Instalip, an ultra-temporary lip plumping procedure that was developed in-house. It’s a combination of hyaluronic acids of varying molecular weights injected so that they only last for two to three weeks. The idea came from the realization that a lot of young women were afraid of fillers because of seeing overly inflated results. “You can have slightly plumper lips, the ones you really want, without looking done, and without a commitment,” says Rachel. “It’s less serious. It’s less intimidating. And if they hate it, their lips go back to normal in two weeks.” 

To keep women coming back regularly — and to encourage a habit of dermatological self care — there is a membership program that lets customers buy a year’s worth of regular services at a 25 percent savings, which amounts to around $100 to $200 a month. “We target a younger clientele, and we are conscious that these girls need to have an idea of their budget,” says Rachel. “You have a budget for the gym, you have a budget for your hair, and now you can have a budget for your skin.”

Each sister is a poster child for regular maintenance. They all do Botox® around twice a year, and each has committed to treatments that address their various skin concerns — from light peels for acne to lasers for redness and hair removal to [mesotherapy](https://aedit.com/procedure/mesotherapy) and [PRP scalp injections for hair loss](https://aedit.com/procedure/plateletrich-plasma-prp-for-hair-loss) (*see below for their individual routines*).

Given their collective careers and how early they began, it’s no surprise to learn that both of their parents were not just doctors but entrepreneurs. Hard work and a sense of adventure was ingrained in their upbringing. From 1984 to 1986 (before Roxane was born), the family lived in Boston, where their biomedical researcher mother, Dr. Barbara Polla, studied at the Harvard School of Public Health. During that time, their father did his post-doctoral fellowship at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Mass General with dermatologist and laser pioneer, Dr. R. Rox Anderson. 

It turned out to be an auspicious start. When Luigi returned to Switzerland and established his own clinic, he did so with lasers and was the first to bring the new technology to Europe. While the lasers were initially used to treat children with port-wine stains and hemangiomas, their existence and medical usage planted the seed for both the skincare line and a booming aesthetics practice.

“Lasers back then were not as ‘lunchtime,’ as they are today, so the treatment created a lot of heat and a lot of redness and swelling and side effects,” says Ada. “My father wanted a product that would heal the skin post-treatment.” The cream he developed with a pharmacist friend was given to children, but their mothers began coming back and asking for seconds. From there, Alchimie Forever was born. 

The original product, the [Kantic Brightening Moisture Mask](https://www.alchimie-forever.com/products/kantic-brightening-moisture-mask), is still the top seller, and the products that have followed — some of which were formulated by Dr. Barbara Polla — all center around combating inflammation and the health of the skin. 

“From the start, it was about calming,” says Ada. “Today people are aware of its importance, but when I had this conversation 10 years ago when we started, it was all about, ‘This product isn’t making my skin red. It’s not making my skin peel. I don’t feel anything, so obviously it’s not working.’” Luckily, that attitude has shifted, and customers more readily understand that irritation is not always the best sign that a product is the right fit for your skin.  

In addition to lending her expertise at formulation, the girls’ mother also lent her beauty outlook, impressing upon them the importance of self care as a form of self-respect. “She was very focused on beauty, but not necessarily looks, more about the feeling that comes with beauty,” says Ada. “It was always important to take time for ourselves, to get injections and treatments and to use creams, not because we’re vain and we want to look much younger than we are, but more in a philosophical way. If we look good, we feel good. And if we feel good, we’ll do good.”

So, what are their go-to treatments for healthy skin? The Polla sisters share their aesthetic regimens with The AEDITION. 

### **Roxane, 30**
“The first treatment I did was [laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal). Now I do light Botox® in between my eyebrows because, when I don't do it, I tend to have frown lines. What I tell my friends is that it's not that I want to hide all my starting wrinkles. It’s more that, when I have that particular one, I feel it doesn't at all represent my personality because it gives me a very stern look, which I feel that I’m not. I still have zits and acne, so I do peels — especially the Alchimie Forever Brightening Peel — on a regular basis.” 

### **Rachel, 36**
“I have started to do Botox® twice a year. I was the first one to try Instalip. I have discovered a new type of laser hair removal for people with blonder hair at Forever Institut. It’s a q-switch laser that kills hair follicles for four months — it works not on a thermal basis but on a mechanical basis. When I need a nice glow, I do the Alchimie peel or another peel we do at the boutique. I’m going to start to do treatments to treat cellulite. It’s a mechanical massage for body contouring for light cellulite.” 

### **Cyrille, 39**
“I have a tendency to have a sensitive vascular system and redness, so I do a lot of the Vbeam laser treatment to reduce rosacea two or three times a year. I've been doing Botox® twice a year. I like enhancing my lips once or twice a year. Since I know I like it, I don’t use Instalip. I use one that lasts for six to nine months. 

After giving birth I started losing a lot of hair, so I tried mesotherapy and PRP injections in the scalp, which really helped. A few years ago I also tried my first Softlift. After giving birth, I lost a bit of weight and that started to show fatigue on my face. SoftLift helped. For summer, I do body contouring and Botox® in the armpits to reduce perspiration. It lasts three or four months.”

### **Ada, 41**
“I have a short answer: The only thing I do is Botox® twice a year when I go to Geneva — only ever with my father. I make up for the lack of in-office treatment with all of the [Alchimie Forever](https://www.alchimie-forever.com/) products, which I slather on myself on a daily basis.”
