Microdosing GLP-1s, like Ozempic or Wegovy, has exploded in popularity over the past year with some TikTok creators saying it has “completely changed their lives.” Some are microdosing as a way to maintain weight, while others are using it as a cost-cutting method. Unless you qualify for insurance coverage, GLP-1s cost $1,000 a month, on average. So, what exactly is microdosing GLP-1s, how does it work, and is it right for you? Let’s dive into it right now.

## **WHAT IS MICRODOSING GLP-1?**

“Microdosing” is the practice of taking smaller doses of medication or drugs than what’s typically prescribed or recommended. There’s a strong chance you’ve heard the term associated with psychedelics, like LSD or psilocybin mushrooms. But, you can microdose any substance—weight-loss drugs included. 

## **HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM STANDARD GLP-1 DOSING?**

Each GLP-1 medication has its own dosage schedule recommended by its manufacturer. But, for the most part, patients following standard protocol start with .25mg for the first four weeks and double the dosage in four-week increments until week 13 (e.g., 0.5mg weeks 5-8, 1mg weeks 9-12). From there, the patient and doctor will collectively decide if they think it’s best to increase the dosage or maintain it at 1mg. The maximum recommended maintenance dosage is 2.4mg.

This approach is particularly useful for patients interested in the metabolic benefits of GLP-1s—like improved insulin sensitivity and glucose control—without necessarily pursuing significant weight loss.”

## **DOES MICRODOSING GLP-1 ACTUALLY WORK?** 

While there’s an overwhelming amount of anecdotal evidence, there isn’t any clinical data to validate that microdosing [semaglutide](https://aedit.com/aedition/a-comprehensive-guide-to-semaglutide-the-current-skinny-on-the-worlds) medication works. In other words, we can’t be certain whether or not microdosing GLP-1 delivers the same, or comparable, results as a standard dosage. 

“It’s true that we don’t yet have robust clinical trial data supporting the efficacy of GLP-1 microdosing, especially when compared head-to-head with full-dose protocols. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t ‘work’—it depends entirely on how you define success. If the goal is aggressive weight loss, a microdose likely won’t match the efficacy of a full therapeutic dose. But if a patient is looking for improved glycemic control, appetite regulation, or sustainable weight management with fewer side effects, microdosing can absolutely be effective.

In clinical practice, we’ve seen patients experience meaningful results at subtherapeutic doses—just more gradually and with better tolerability. So while microdosing may not deliver the same magnitude of effect, it can still ‘work’ when the outcome aligns with the patient’s specific goals,” says Dr. Kennedy.

Regardless of taking a full dosage or a micro dosage, it’s critical that patients work under professional guidance to increase effectiveness and limit any potential complications.

## **WHY MICRODOSE GLP-1S?** 

While there are a lot of people who microdose because of financial restraints, microdosing is also thought to have medical benefits, such as minimizing side effects. When taken at the recommended dosage, GLP-1s can cause unwanted side effects, like nausea, GI issues, and dizziness. Taking a smaller dose can help patients lose weight without lifestyle disruptions. 

Additionally, doctors sometimes prescribe microdosing once their patient has reached their target weight. Since most people gain the weight back after going off of GPL-1s, a lot of people will microdose as a way to maintain their results.

Dr. Kennedy concludes, “microdosing GLP-1s can be a practical, cost-effective alternative for patients who either can’t tolerate full doses or are looking for a gentler on-ramp to treatment. That said, while early clinical experience is promising, microdosing hasn’t been formally studied in large trials and isn’t FDA-approved. As we move into 2025, there are tons of non-invasive treatments to enhance features and reverse the signs of aging. These types of treatments typically are in-office and, compared to surgery, have a much lower price tag; think dermal filler, Botox, and laser. They can cost anywhere from a couple hundred to a few thousand dollars per session. True plastic surgeries remain the most effective, but they require significant downtime and can cost thousands of dollars. 

With so many recent celebrity transformations, we’re itching for answers on how to turn heads like Lindsay Lohan did. Read on as we cover what work Lindsay Lohan likely had done, what non-invasive procedures to book for a major glow-up, and what you can realistically accomplish on a non-celebrity budget. 

## **Here’s an Overview of Lindsay Lohan’s Transformation**

Dr. Kennedy recommends consulting with an experienced injector to see if any existing filler can or should be dissolved.

As always, it’s important to manage expectations. These treatments outlined above can be absolute miracle workers, but, as Dr. Kennedy speculated, Lohan most likely had a couple of plastic surgeries (a lower blepharoplasty and a face and neck lift). Dr. Kennedy guessed that Lohan’s glow-up could have cost anywhere from $60k to $300k.

## **Patient Perspective**

As a beauty writer, I’ve covered a lot of cosmetic treatments and surgeries over the years; I’ve spoken with dozens of expert plastic surgeons and dermatologists, and it wasn’t until recently that I comprehended just how big of a shift we’re seeing in cosmetic advancements. 

If you read my 101 article on [EMFACE](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-emface) (shameless plug: read it, if you haven’t already!), then you probably know that I met with Dr. Shafer and his team at the [Shafer Clinic](https://www.shaferplasticsurgery.com/) over the fall to get a first-hand perspective of this new treatment. Despite all of the research I had done, I was totally taken aback (in a good way!) by the results. EMFACE significantly tightened the skin around my jawline and chin, making my face appear more youthful and thinner. Friends and family would comment - and still comment - on how good I look. And, unless I tell them about the treatment, there is virtually no way for them to know what “work” I had done. 

Possibly the most mind-boggling part of it all is how little effort it took. I would pop into the Shafer Clinic (which is conveniently just a few blocks from Grand Central) and be in and out within 45 minutes—but, it could easily be under 30 minutes had I not been so chatty. 

I met with Lucia Miranda, LE, CCMA, licensed esthetician at Shafer Clinic, for all four of my sessions. After wiping the skin with an alcohol cleanser, she would place the back grounding pad, two facial pads on my cheeks, and a third facial pad under my chin. With EMFACE, you have the option to target the forehead of the submental area (the triangle under the chin). Lucia usually recommends targeting the submental area, which tightens any loose skin on the lower face.

“I often recommend EMFACE to patients who are concerned about jowls or noticing a 'turkey neck.' The submental pad allows us to target and lift the lower face, reducing sagging. While EMFACE does have a forehead pad, I rarely use it because I find that neuromodulators and fillers tend to provide more precise results for addressing forehead lines and wrinkles,” Miranda shares with us.

The actual procedure is 20 minutes and a little uncomfortable; your face twitches involuntarily and there’s a bit of a tickling sensation. But, as far as cosmetic treatments go, it really was not that bad. At the end of it, I was able to go back to my day as if nothing had happened; there was no swelling or bruising, just a little redness—and, only because my skin is on the fair side.

According to the most recent[ American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/news/statistics/2023/minimally-invasive-procedure-trends-2023.pdf) data (and some rough math), someone is undergoing a filler treatment nearly every five seconds. This past year, doctors recorded over [six million ](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/news/statistics/2023/minimally-invasive-procedure-trends-2023.pdf)treatments of dermal filler, making it the second most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatment — after Botox, of course. But, lately, we’ve been hearing some pretty mixed reviews of the omnipresent treatment. Most commonly, we’ve heard rumblings that filler can “migrate” or move after it’s been injected. We’ve also heard horror stories that it might not [dissolve](https://www.newsweek.com/mri-scan-33-year-old-woman-face-shows-filler-ended-surgery-1925089) or can even make your face puffy. Given it’s almost as widespread as Botox, we all agreed that we needed answers. Stat. So, we reached out to our network of experts to find out if filler migration is a myth or fact.

## **Why is Everyone Talking About Filler Migration Now?**

If you feel like the term “filler migration” just popped up overnight, it’s not just you. It kind of did. Over the summer, a Beverly Hills oculoplastic surgeon posted a [video](https://www.tiktok.com/@kamiparsamd/video/7390433025697533230) to TikTok sharing the findings of an MRI scan of facial filler… and the internet went absolutely wild. The patient, a 33-year-old woman, reported she had 12 CCs of hyaluronic filler over the past six years, yet the scan showed that there was over double that amount of facial filler present under her skin, and in places she hadn’t even been injected. The video’s comment section became flooded with similar stories of having never-dissolving filler, which contradicts everything we’ve been told about filler.

Until now, we’ve been, we’ve always been under the impression that fillers are not permanent. If you ask any doctor, they’ll most likely give you a similar answer: HA-based fillers typically last anywhere from six months to a year and a half whereas non-HA-based fillers last a minimum of two years. It’s hard to predict exactly how long a filler will stay in someone’s body, but board-certified NYC cosmetic dermatologist [Dr. Michele Green](https://www.michelegreenmd.com/) says the longevity of any filler can also be affected by the patient’s skin characteristics, metabolism, and lifestyle choices.

“Low skin elasticity makes it hard for the skin to hold a filler, leading to a shorter length of results. Fast metabolisms can lead to quicker degradation of a filler. Excess sun exposure can break down collagen fibers, leading to reduced longevity of a filler,” she tells us.

## **What is “Filler Migration” and Can it Really Happen?**

Though it’s an uncommon side effect, our expert network confirmed that it’s not just a myth — filler migration does exist. For several reasons (we’ll get to that later on), it is possible for the injected filler to move from its injection site to another area of the face. But, to be clear, we’re talking about movement in millimeters, not anything drastic. 

“Filler migration is not a common side effect of dermal filler injection procedures,” NYC-based board-certified dermatologist [Brendan Camp, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/brendan-camp-md-34645) assures us. “It may be more likely to occur when someone gets filler treatments often in which a high volume of filler is used over time and is layered on previously injected filler.”

So, if you notice lingering asymmetry, lumps, unevenness, or puffiness after getting filler, then there’s a good chance it could be the infamous “filler migration.” According to Dr. Green, the dreaded filler migration can occur anywhere, but it most commonly presents itself in areas with thin skin, like the lips and tear troughs (under the eyes). While the onset of filler migration varies, Dr. Camp says it usually happens within days of the treatment if the injection was too superficial or within months as the filler is metabolized and its structure is altered.

But, again, remember that it’s not that common. 

## **What causes Filler Migration?**

While we can’t control whether or not our filler migrates, there are a few things to stack the odds in our favor. Dr. Green says that the most common causes of filler migration are overfilling, incorrect injection technique, and using the wrong filler. 

Dr. Green breaks it down for us: “too much filler in an area can cause a pressure imbalance, resulting in the filler migrating towards adjacent tissues. Inadequate injection techniques, such as injecting too close to the surface or using excessive pressure, can also lead to filler migration. Additionally, there are many different types of fillers on the market, all with varying concentrations and formulations. Using a filler that is not suited for the injected area can result in filler displacement.”

While any filler can result in filler migration, Dr. Camp and Dr. Green both said that non-HA-based fillers are less likely to migrate compared to HA-based fillers. This is because they promote new collagen production, which reduces the risk of migration.

And, Dr. Camp warns that HA-based fillers can expand after treatment because the filler is not saturated with water in the syringe. As a result, the HA molecule attracts and retains water and can cause additional swelling after it has been placed in the skin.

## **Can You Remove Filler?**

There’s a good chance you’ve heard conflicting answers to whether or not filler can be removed — and, that’s because some types of filler can be dissolved whereas other types can’t be. According to the experts, HA fillers can be dissolved whereas non-HA fillers can’t.

HA-based fillers can fortunately be dissolved with an agent called hyaluronidase, which is a naturally occurring enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid into its smaller components. Once injected into the area of filler migration, hyaluronidase acts immediately, with results visible after just 48 hours, says Dr. Green.

Unfortunately, there’s still no technology to dissolve or remove non-HA filler. The only solution is time and, depending on the type of filler used, patients may have to wait several months or years. That being said, Dr. Green said there are certain circumstances where a plastic surgeon might help, like if a granuloma has formed and can be excised. 

## **The Bottom Line**

Filler migration does exist, but it shouldn’t hold you back.  While the issue isn’t black and white, there are always ways to mitigate risk, most importantly by selecting the right injector. Seeking treatment from a board-certified physician who has the knowledge to choose the right type of filler for you and inject it properly is the safest way to ensure you are getting ideal results.

The Salmon Sperm Facial: What Are Polynucleotides, and Is This Trending Skincare Treatment Worth All the Hype?

EMFACE

A treatment with no needles, no downtime, and with sessions that take less time than a mani / pedi… count us in. EMFACE is a new, non-invasive facial rejuvenation treatment by BTL (most famous for EMSCULPT) that everyone in the skincare world has been buzzing about. The innovative device, which was FDA-approved in 2022, uses a combination of high-intensity focused electrical stimulation (HIFES) and synchronized radiofrequency (RF). The HIFES acts as a “facial workout” that tones and lifts the facial muscles while the RF heats the skin and stimulates collagen and elastin production. 

Doctors are particularly excited about this new technology because it addresses two of the most common signs of aging: facial volume loss and wrinkles. “It is exciting because it targets the facial muscles and helps tone, tighten, and build muscle for a more youthful-looking appearance,” says [David Shafer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-shafer-md-153 "David Shafer, MD"), a double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon and founder of Shafer Clinic in New York City.  

So, how exactly does EMFACE work and does it really live up to all of the hype? Read on. 

## What does the treatment entail?
Getting EMFACE could not be easier; the treatment takes a little over 20 minutes and virtually has no downtime. The only “downside” (and we put that in quotes because it’s really not that big of a deal) is that, in order to get optimized results, the treatment calls for four sessions that are scheduled about a week apart. 

Before getting the EMFACE treatment, your provider will take about 10 minutes to prep your skin and the equipment. First, they’ll wipe your face with an alcohol cleanser to help the sticky pads adhere properly. From there, they’ll place a grounding pad on your upper back, which attaches to the machine and is responsible for safely channeling the energy to the facial pads. As a last step, they’ll place three pads on your face: one on your forehead and one on each of your cheeks. Now, you’re ready to go. Your provider will turn the machine on and it’ll start to work its magic; for the next 20 minutes, the pads will send signals that contract the facial muscles, making you involuntarily smile and twitch. You may feel a little bit of heat from the RF and a tickling sensation from the HIFES, but most people report that it is a fairly comfortable treatment. 

While the actual EMFACE session is quite quick, it’s important to note that it can take time before you see a noticeable difference. Dr. Shafer says you can expect peak results around one to three months post-treatment. It’s also worth mentioning that you’ll likely need to go in for maintenance sessions a few times a year after those four initial treatments.

## How does EMFACE compare to other facial rejuvenation treatments?
While EMFACE uses unmatched technology, experts say its best used in combination with other rejuvenation treatments. For instance, Santa Monica based Board-Certified Dermatologist [Dr. Ava Shamban, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/ava-shamban-md-2325), views EMFACE as complementary to treatments like Botox and filler. Since Botox and other neuromodulators work by relaxing the muscles that pull down the skin, Dr. Shamban says that ideally, a patient would have a neuromodulator treatment first, followed by an Emface treatment. 

Compared to filler, Dr. Shamban says EMFACE is completely different. “Emface can give a mild lift to fat pads that overly the muscles that are lifting, but it doesn’t address lip volume or cheek volume changes. It can improve facial contour and appearance of the jawline,” she tells us.

The same goes for Ultherapy, another non-invasive rejuvenation treatment; the two procedures treat different signs of aging. According to Dr. Shafer, Ultherapy tightens tissue by targeting loose or saggy skin whereas EMFACE lifts and tones the underlying muscle through muscle stimulation. 

And, in case you were wondering, while EMFACE is a total game-changer, it’s not going to replace a facelift… sorry! With the current technology, sadly no non-invasive treatment can deliver comparable results. That being said, you can combine EMFACE with other in-office treatments to achieve results that have never been possible until now.

## Bottom line: is EMFACE worth it?
EMFACE is a great option for those who are needle-phobic, are too young for injectables, or who want efficacious but natural-looking results. Since the treatment doesn’t have any downtime, Dr. Shafer says it’s particularly attractive for his patients looking for pain-free quick solutions with subtle results. 

Aside from its price point, the biggest limitation to EMFACE is that you can’t have metal plates or implants in your mouth, since it can interfere with the energy currents. But, as always, it’s best to discuss with your board-certified dermatologist to see if EMFACE is a good fit for you. 

For those who aren’t getting the desired results from their existing skincare treatments or find that needles are a barrier, EMFACE could be a great fit for them -- if their budget allows. Depending on the provider and location, the treatment costs around $4,000 for four sessions.
