Searching for a product you can trust is like dating, not every one will be a fit and only time will tell whether it’s working or not. Here’s what you should know about adding skin-firming creams to your routine.  

**Check The Label:**: Potent ingredients and their delivery system are the backbones of skin-firming creams. “We work with active ingredients that were tested in specific areas of the body,” explains Reder. “Then we clinically test the product on the specific area of the body – so in arms, we look at loose, crepey skin, and the circumference of the upper arm.” It may seem that all skin is created equal but it’s not with various areas requiring a methodic approach.
**Do Your Research:** The same way we’d do research on an injectable treatment or a cosmetic procedure, we should be doing for the products we put on our bodies. If a brand is worth its salt, the proof will be there. “Brands that are serious about results will prove it with a clinical study, a self-perception study, or both,” explains Reder. We know that brands often blur the lines with their data so Reder notes that “high-performance ingredients and rigorous testing do come at a cost, so if you’re looking at a prestige brand with a higher price point, make sure that it is because they substantiate their results.” Additionally, she recommends seeing checking reviews from others who have tried the products themselves. “My favorite part about our community is when they share their before and after pictures. **Use As Instructed:** “Proper application is essential for maximum results,” explains Khanna. After all, you wouldn’t skip your SPF every day, so why would other creams that require daily use be any different? Some require daily use, others can benefit from twice a day and should be used accordngly. Khanna recommends massaging the cream into the skin. “Using the recommended self-massage technique can aid in lymphatic drainage and assist in optimum product application for maximum benefit.”  
**Set Your Expectations:** It’s natural to hear the word ‘firming’ and immediately assume the results will rival those of in-office procedures but set your expectations accordingly. While Reder notes that results can be seen in a relatively short period of time, it’s not a guarantee. “We see clinical results at both 28 and 56-day marks, but everyone is different.”

While we’d all love a miracle cream that has the transformative powers of hours in the gym and a clean diet, the reality is: that there’s no such thing. Much like 2020 before it, we don’t need to tell you that 2021 was a unique year. Even so, new data from the [American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS)](https://www.aafprs.org/) –  the world’s largest association of facial plastic surgeons – finds that lingering pandemic-related concerns couldn’t thwart the demand for aesthetic procedures. “After lockdowns ended and vaccinations rolled out, our patients who had been postponing reconstructive work, upkeep, maintenance, or surgery were eager to schedule treatments to help them feel refreshed, confident, and ready to take on work, events, playdates,” says [Corey S. Maas, MD](https://www.maasclinic.com/), a double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and president of the AAFPRS. 

Based on reporting from some 2,200 AAFPRS members, the total number of facial plastic surgery treatments was up substantially, with an estimated 1.4 million [surgical](https://aedit.com/aedition/biggest-medical-aesthetics-trends-of-2022-for-face-body) and [non-surgical](https://aedit.com/aedition/biggest-non-surgical-aesthetics-trends-of-2022) procedures completed. On average, facial plastic surgeons performed about 600 more procedures in 2021 than they did in 2020. That amounts to a 40 percent increase. So, what did the uptick in bookings mean for treatment trends and patient motivations? Below are some of the key takeaways from the [2021 AAFPRS Annual Survey](https://www.aafprs.org/Media/Press_Releases/2021%20Survey%20Results.aspx). 

## **Surgery Reigns Supreme**
While there was a return to in-person gatherings at certain points of 2021, the hybrid nature of the year had patients opting for surgical intervention at a higher rate. Of those AAFPRS members who experienced an increase in appointments, 92 percent indicated it was because people had more time and flexibility to [recover](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-plastic-surgery-recovery-nurses-centers-products). “With more time still being spent at home, there was less concern about the recovery time for surgical treatments,” Dr. Maas notes. Similarly telling: 83 percent of AAFPRS members say 75 percent or more of their work is facial plastic surgery – up from 75 percent in 2020. 

But that doesn’t mean everyone was going under the knife. More patients than ever were interested in ‘tweakments.’ [Neurotoxins](https://aedit.com/aedition/where-to-use-botox-from-head-to-toe) (63 percent) and [fillers](https://aedit.com/aedition/hyaluronic-acid-filler-vs-biostimulatory-injectables) (57 percent) were among the top procedures performed most often on women in 2021. Rounding out the top three? [Rhinoplasty](https://aedit.com/aedition/reinventing-rhinoplasty-whats-different-about-modern-nose-jobs) at 62 percent, which is also the top surgery for patients under the age of 34.

The top procedures for male patients were rhinoplasty (79 percent), neurotoxins (58 percent), and [blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/blepharoplasty-eyelid-surgery) (42 percent). While women still make up the large majority of aesthetics patients, [more men than ever](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-you-need-to-know-about-male-plastic-surgery-trends) are seeking treatment. [Hair transplants](https://aedit.com/procedure/surgical-hair-restoration-solutions) may be the only procedure for which men far surpass women as patients, but it is part of a larger development. Blepharoplasty and neuromodulators are trending towards more balance, with a lower percentage of surgeons indicating these procedures are performed on “mostly females.” 

## **Patient Perspective**
In 2020, an [AEDIT survey found](https://aedit.com/aedition/aedit-survey-reveals-how-2020-altered-aesthetic-landscape) that millennials and gen Z accounted for the largest age group interested in aesthetic procedures. The AAFPRS survey continues to bear this out. Patients age 56 or older represented a lower percentage of overall procedures in 2021 than previous years (the organization notes that this may be because of COVID-19 concerns). 

[Social media](https://aedit.com/aedition/march-2020-study-shows-relationship-between-social-media-cosmetic-surgery) and our continued reliance on video conferencing remain key motivators for patients seeking treatment. In fact, 79 percent of facial plastic surgeons identify patients seeking procedures for an improved appearance on video conferencing as a rising trend, compared to only 16 percent the previous year. “The use of video for business, social media, and self-promotion is now so ingrained in society that it provides an easy and ever-present lens for self-scrutiny,” Dr. Maas explains. “We’ve slowly moved from static image filters to ‘Zoom dysmorphia’ being the major patient motivator as the pressures of a virtual lifestyle continue to impact the way we view ourselves and the way we present to peers.”

And then there is the ongoing influence of face coverings. We deemed ‘[eyes the new lips](https://aedit.com/aedition/popularity-of-eyelid-surgery-cosmetic-eye-procedures-during-covid-19)’ back in June 2020, and the upper third of the face continues to take center stage. More than 70 percent of AAFPRS members indicated that more and more patients were asking for eyelid procedures to [look less tired](https://aedit.com/procedure/eye-rejuvenation-solutions) (up 17 percent from 2020). Interest in [brow lifts](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-surgical-and-non-invasive-brow-lift-procedures) also saw a jump, as did [face and neck lifts](https://aedit.com/aedition/pairing-facelift-neck-lift-procedures).

A newer but notable lift trend: The rise of [lip lifts](https://aedit.com/aedition/lip-lift-procedure-instead-of-lip-filler) (i.e. the surgical procedure that addresses the distance between the base of the nose and top of the lip for a fuller, more youthful effect). A new category for the 2021 survey, 70 percent of surgeons report that they performed the pout-enhancing procedure last year. It serves as a longer-lasting and more natural-looking alternative to the overly augmented look that recently dominated patient requests. ## **All About Expertise**
Perhaps one of the most encouraging findings is the emphasis on expertise. The 2021 survey indicates that patients’ primary concern is finding a surgeon they can trust (36 percent), followed by worries about an unnatural result (30 percent). While no procedure is [without risk](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-cosmetic-surgery-complications), the likelihood of a safe and successful outcome is greatly influenced by the qualifications (think: [board certification](https://aedit.com/aedition/medical-board-certification-in-plastic-surgery-cosmetic-dermatology)) and specialty of the provider. Increasingly, patients seem to be valuing and prioritizing this. “For most procedures, effective communication between surgeon and patient is the number one key to a successful outcome,” Dr. Maas notes. “This includes a mutually agreed upon, [reasonable expectation](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-plastic-surgeons-balance-patients-cosmetic-surgery-desires-and-safety) for improvement and what is realistically possible for individual patients and their goals.”

Surgical procedures are up, as are the number of men looking to address aesthetic concerns.

Much like the fashion and beauty industries, each year brings a new wave of trends in the aesthetics space. In [2020](https://aedit.com/aedition/aedit-survey-reveals-how-2020-altered-aesthetic-landscape) and [2021](https://aedit.com/aedition/biggest-medical-aesthetics-trends-of-2021-for-face-body]), the COVID-19 pandemic saw patients and providers focus on more invasive procedures for the eyes, nose, and the body due to face coverings and more discreet downtime at home to recover. With that said, non-surgical treatments never go out of style. We’re collectively hoping that 2022 will usher in a return to in-person gatherings, travel, and (pretty please!) a little less Zoom, which means non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments that boast little to no downtime are just what the doctor ordered. And, fortunately, there is plenty of innovation for both face and body in the category.

As we get settled into the [new year](https://aedit.com/aedition/biggest-medical-aesthetics-trends-of-2022-for-face-body), you may be wondering what to expect in the space. Recently, we hosted an Instagram Live with [Ava Shamban, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/ava-shamban-md-2325), a board certified cosmetic dermatologist in Beverly Hills, creator of [The Box by Dr. Ava](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theboxbydrava.com%2F), and principal investigator on many clinical and FDA trials (read: she knows a thing or two about what’s new and next), to discuss the most promising non-surgical trends you’ll no doubt be hearing about this year. ### **1. New Categories of Injectables**
When it comes to cosmetic injectables, neurotoxins (hi, [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox), [Dysport®](https://aedit.com/procedure/dysportr), [Jeuveau®](https://aedit.com/procedure/jeuveau), and [Xeomin®](https://aedit.com/procedure/xeomin)) and hyaluronic acid-based fillers (think: [Juvéderm®](https://aedit.com/procedure/juvederm) and [Restylane®](https://aedit.com/procedure/restylane)) have been household names for a while now. The former can minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, slim the jaw, and even treat medical conditions like migraines or [excessive sweating](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-for-hyperhidrosis), while the latter can plump and contour the lips, cheeks, under eyes, and more. Together, they account for the most popular cosmetic procedures of any kind with nearly eight million injections [performed in 2020](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2020/plastic-surgery-statistics-full-report-2020.pdf) alone.

So, what’s coming next in the category? HA fillers already made a splash with the [FDA approval](https://aedit.com/aedition/fda-approves-juvederm-volbella-xc-under-eye-filler) of Juvéderm® Volbella XC for improvement of infraorbital hollows (a.k.a under eyes) in adults over the age of 21. On the neuromodulator front, it’s expected that new longer and shorter acting products will continue to make their way through the approval process.

And then there are the [biostimulatory injectables](https://aedit.com/aedition/hyaluronic-acid-filler-vs-biostimulatory-injectables) to consider. Dr. Shamban is intrigued by updated uses for calcium hydroxylapatite (CAHA) fillers like [Radiesse®](https://aedit.com/procedure/radiesse). By hyper-diluting the product with lidocaine and saline, you can treat areas that previously required other modalities to address. “You inject it in areas where there's crepiness or deep lines or wrinkles that you would typically retreat with laser,” she explains. “You could do it in the neck, the decolletage, the arms, and it’s also a way to treat cellulite.” For best results, she recommends one treatment every three weeks for a total of three.

### **2. Next-Generation Threads**
A [thread lift](https://aedit.com/aedition/pdo-thread-lift-for-facial-rejuvenation) involves subcutaneous placement of dissolvable ‘threads’ (i.e. sutures) along a planned trajectory in the face or body. They are pulled to achieve a subtle skin lift, while also encouraging collagen production for more volume in the treated areas. It’s performed in-office under local anesthesia, and there is no scarring and little downtime. 

Thread lifts have had a major upgrade. While they’ve been in use for more than 20 years, the threads of today are lighter, more durable, and more comfortable. “The old threads were non-absorbable and made of nylon,” Dr. Shamban explains. “The newer generation threads are biostimulators, so they stimulate your own production of collagen and, over time, you get a nice lift from the thread.” Increasingly, [men](https://aedit.com/aedition/thread-lifts-for-men) are turning to thread lifts to correct sagging along the neck area and jowls.

In the future, Dr. Shamban says to keep an eye out for even more advanced threads that introduce [hyaluronic acid](https://aptos.global/post/116/brand-new-aptos-thread-hyaluronic-acid) (yes, the same ingredient that’s used in your favorite filler and skincare products) to the equation for additional benefits.

### **3. A Multi-Modal Approach**
Combination therapy — also referred to as a multi-modal approach — has gained steam in the aesthetics space due to the fact that many procedures complement each other nicely and, let’s face it, the last couple years have forced us to [maximize](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-aesthetic-procedures-to-combine-to-maximize-appointments) our in-office time. Just as you might consider combining a [neck lift with a facelift](https://aedit.com/aedition/pairing-facelift-neck-lift-procedures) or a [breast lift and augmentation](https://aedit.com/aedition/combining-breast-augmentation-with-breast-lift), you can think about pairing non-surgical treatments. 

“The whole is greater than the sum of the parts,” Dr. Shamban shares. “So, that's why we like to design a treatment plan for people where we figure out what we're doing when.” No two patients are the same, and there are endless options as far as combos are concerned. “For people who have more laxity – for the older patient population – we often will combine radiofrequency microneedling with an ultrasound tightening,” she explains. That might mean alternating [Morpheus8](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling-with-radiofrequency) and  [Sofwave™](https://aedit.com/aedition/sofwave-for-skin-tightening-collagen-production) sessions. “Depending on where you are in your life, we may just do one and then we may do the other later on,” Dr. Shamban notes. “And then, if you're a little bit more mature, we may do both.”

### **4. Lip Architecture** 
It would seem as though the hype around the oversized and over-plumped [lip filler](https://aedit.com/procedure/temporary-lip-fillers) of years past is fianlly fading in favor of a more customizable focus on [lip shape](https://aedit.com/concern/lip-shape) (this is a trend you can also see in the beauty sphere). “You can't really change the shape of your lip, but you can enhance it,” Dr. Shamban explains.

She says the so-called ‘Russian lip’ technique is intriguing because it involves “injecting in a different way that can really emphasize the shape” while honoring the natural anatomy. “We all have a unique shape,” Dr. Shamban reiterates. “So, you started emphasizing the shape by injecting different patterns going across [the lip].” It’s a more complicated and involved injection than just adding volume, but, in the hands of a skilled injector, the results are a plush and proportional pout.

### **5. Topical Carboxy Treatments** 
Are you familiar with [carboxy therapy](https://aedit.com/procedure/carboxy-therapy)? If you’re not, you’re not alone. But you heard it here first: Topical versions of the carbon dioxide-based treatment are about to have a moment thanks to their ability to stimulate blood flow, boost elasticity, and improve the overall appearance of the skin. While carboxy treatments historically involved injections and downtime, new topical iterations are proving to be just as effective at eliminating toxins, improving nutrient delivery, and boosting wound healing. This makes carboxy masks a good option for patients healing from certain laser or resurfacing treatments. Dr. Shamban says to expect both professional and at-home options to continue to enter the market.

Here’s the spark notes: In 2022, you can expect to see injectables being used in new ways, as well as a combination approach to maximize your results. Thread lifts will be more high tech than ever, lip shape begins to take precedence over lip size, and topical carboxy masks will become a popular post-procedure add-on to boost results or a stand-alone option to improve your complexion. Given how much we all talk about the [under eye filler](https://aedit.com/procedure/under-eye-filler), it’s easy to assume that the treatment was already an indication approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But injecting the tear troughs to rejuvenate hollows and minimize the appearance of bags and dark circles has actually been an ‘off label’ use of hyaluronic acid (HA)-based filler. Not any more. 

On Tuesday, Allergan Aesthetics [announced](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fda-approves-juvederm-volbella-xc-for-undereye-hollows-301477144.html) the FDA approval of [Juvéderm® Volbella XC](https://aedit.com/procedure/juvederm) for improvement of infraorbital hollows in adults over the age of 21. “This additional indication… demonstrates Allergan Aesthetics' continued commitment to innovation,” Carrie Strom, president of Global Allergan Aesthetics and senior vice president of AbbVie, said in a press release. So, what does the news mean for your next filler appointment? Here’s what you need to know.

## **The Popularity of Under Eye Filler**
Under eye filler has risen in popularity over the last couple of years, especially as pandemic-related face coverings put more [emphasis on the eyes](https://aedit.com/aedition/popularity-of-eyelid-surgery-cosmetic-eye-procedures-during-covid-19) and the stress of everyday life made dark circles, well, darker. “The under eye area is one of the most frequently requested treatment sites among patients, regardless of race and ethnicity, but it is undertreated,” says [Julie Woodward, MD](https://www.dukehealth.org/find-doctors-physicians/julie-ann-woodward-md), a board certified oculofacial plastic surgeon and ophthalmologist and Allergan Medical Institute (AMI) trainer. “This is in part because it is a sensitive area to inject as it takes great skill and precision.”

The tear troughs are a very delicate area to treat and require [unique technique](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-injectable-techniques-needles-for-botox-filler) from a highly skilled provider. This approval should help improve the safety and efficacy of the procedure.  Per an FDA requirement for this new indication, Allergan Aesthetics will provide training programs, including how to assess facial anatomy holistically and the identification and management of [potential complications](https://aedit.com/aedition/risk-of-vascular-occlusion-after-dermal-filler). Providers will need to complete this training before being allowed to inject Juvéderm® Volbella XC under the eyes. 

## **The Benefits of Under Eye Filler with Juvéderm Volbella XC**
Juvéderm® Volbella XC was first approved by the FDA in 2016 for use in the lips and perioral rhytids (a.k.a. the vertical lines that extend from the upper lip). What gives the product a natural look and feel for the lip area extends to the tear troughs. “The characteristics of Juvéderm® Volbella XC with lower amounts of hyaluronic acid molecules and low water affinity provides a soft, smooth formulation appropriate for treating under eye hollows,” Dr. Woodward explains.

Allergan Aesthetics reports that, according to clinical trial data, 90 percent of patients reported satisfaction through one year after treatment with Juvéderm® Volbella XC and said they would recommend the treatment to a friend. “The results of the clinical trial demonstrate significant improvements in the appearance of under eye hollows and overall appearance,” Dr. Woodward shares. “In addition, 80 percent of subjects reported they were a little or not at all bothered by how tired and old the under eye area looked at three months compared to 15 percent and 30 percent before treatment, respectively.”

## **Under Eye Filler Recovery & Results**
The majority of patients in the clinical trials experienced side effects such as injection site tenderness, [bruising](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-bruising-after-lasers-filler-botox), swelling, lumps and bumps, redness, pain after injection, firmness, discoloration (other than redness or swelling), and/or itching. This data is based on patient reporting in their 30-day daily diaries. Allergan Aesthetics notes that a majority of these side effects were “mild in severity” and “easily tolerated” – though some subjects experienced mild swelling that lingered for more than 30 days post-treatment. One patient in that group required treatment with antibiotics (the rest did not require intervention), and all of these effects resolved by day 45.

The results of all hyaluronic acid-based fillers are [temporary](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-frequently-to-get-non-surgical-cosmetic-procedures-like-dermal-filler-botox-chemical-peel), and under eye filler is no exception. Based on the clinical studies, patients reported being satisfied with their results from Juvéderm® Volbella XC for at least 12 months.

Not only is sunscreen a first line of defense against [skin cancer](https://aedit.com/aedition/bipoc-skin-cancer-awareness), but it also helps to prevent the visible signs of aging caused by damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. As such, it needs to be worn during daylight hours every single day, rain or shine, whether you are spending time outdoors or not. 

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) [recommends](https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/sun-protection/sunscreen-patients/sunscreen-faqs) using a sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 30. The formula should be ‘broad spectrum’ – which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays – and, ideally, water resistant. Guys may not be talking, but the statistics speak volumes. More and more men are choosing to go under the knife — or needle — to combat their aesthetic concerns. The [American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/men-and-plastic-surgery) that male cosmetic procedures (both surgical and non-surgical) rose 29 percent between 2000 and 2018, and the spike is changing the scope of dermatology and plastic surgery practices all over the U.S. 

“I’m operating on three men this week,” says Nashville-based board certified plastic surgeon [Jacob Unger, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jacob-unger-md-2649). “Out of about 20 patients I saw for consultations today, five of them were men.” 

Fueled by today’s selfie-obsessed social media culture, the rise of less invasive procedures, and the marketing efforts of industry giants like Allergan (you know, the makers of [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial) and [CoolSculpting®](https://aedit.com/procedure/cool-sculpting)), men are increasingly more aware of the options they have to address cosmetic concerns. 

“In my practice, I find that a lot of times it’s the wives who motivate their husbands to come in,” Dr. Unger says. “They see their spouse’s positive results and wonder, ‘So what can you do for me?’”

## **What Men Want**
According to the [American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)](https://www.surgery.org/media/statistics), men represented seven percent of all plastic surgery procedures performed in 2018. Their top-five most requested treatments?

And then there’s the love affair with non-invasiveness. Last year alone, the ratio of non-surgical to surgical cosmetic procedures was two to one for men, with injectables, non-invasive body contouring, and [hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) among the go-tos. 

“Men don’t like downtime,” says Dr. Unger, who has noticed an uptick in guys seeking minimally-invasive body tightening and fat reduction. 

Another common request? “Brotox” — ahem, Botox®. 

“One thing’s for sure: Men tend to need a lot more Botox®,” says board certified Los Angeles plastic surgeon [Jason Roostaeian, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-roostaeian-md-449), noting that male facial muscles are larger than their female counterparts, which leads to deeper expression lines. 

While men’s skin tends to age better (guys are less prone to laxity and crepiness than gals) thanks to its thickness, blood flow, and numerous accessory glands, they are not immune to the visible signs of aging. As Dr. Unger explains, many men don’t invest time and consideration into their skincare and suncare routines like women, which can undermine some of the biological advantages. 

## **Questions Men Aren’t Asking**
Regardless of the invasiveness of the procedure, both surgeons find that their male patients usually approach the consultation and decision-making process differently than women. “Men don’t like to ask for directions. They also don’t like to ask about the intricacies and nuances of a procedure,” says Dr. Unger. “It’s often a game of 20 questions with men to pinpoint exactly what’s bothering them. Usually, you get to that ‘eureka’ moment where they’re like, ‘Yeah, that’s it!’”

Dr. Jason finds his conversations with male patients to be similarly one-sided. “The consultation is always a little bit more directed by me,” he explains. “I make sure I hit all the main points since they’re not usually asking all those questions.” Even so, men generally show up to the consultation ready to act — even when they don’t know exactly what they want. 

## **Keeping It Au Naturale**
One thing they do know? “Nobody wants to look done, and everyone wants to look natural,” says Dr. Jason, though the request is not as simple as it sounds.

As Dr. Unger explains, over-correcting aesthetic concerns in men can lead to more feminine features, so finding a surgeon who understands the balancing act of how to preserve a masculine appearance is key. 

“It’s a whole different level of complexity because it’s not an idealized final result we’re looking for,” he says. “In men, a certain number of flaws or contour irregularities can be handsome, so it’s deciding what areas make a man look good but not old — what can you take away and still leave them looking like themselves? What is age-appropriate and strong without being overly smooth and overly youthful?”

Beyond the subtleties of technique, there are also physiological differences that surgeons must take into account when performing plastic surgery procedures on men. Take, for example, a [rhytidectomy](https://aedit.com/procedure/deep-plane-facelift) (a.k.a. facelift). Dr. Unger jokes that, before performing a male facelift, “you better eat your Wheaties” because the [SMAS](https://aedit.com/procedure/smas-facelift) (the underlying facial tissue that’s manipulated during a deep plane facelift) is much tougher in men than in women. 

Concealing the incisions from these procedures can present challenges as well. “Obviously you have to worry about the hairline,” says Dr. Jason. “Sideburns and beards are a huge factor. Plus, men tend to wear their hair short — or they could be bald.” He explains that strategic incision placement is critical because men are more sensitive than women about not wanting any telltale signs of plastic surgery. It should also be noted that face and neck lifts carry a higher risk of hematoma in men because they tend to have higher blood pressure and greater skin vascularity than women.

All of this is to say that, not only do men and women have different cosmetic concerns, but they also require different kinds of care. Dr. Jason and Dr. Unger put The AEDITION in touch with their male patients to get a better sense of what the plastic surgery process was like for them.

## **Patient Perspective**

### **Robert**
Robert* had concerns about “a few problem areas” around his torso that were becoming worse with age when he first visited Dr. Unger. But that’s not to say he was ready to take the plunge. He admits to having been “completely unsure” about having plastic surgery and was “mostly leaning toward not doing the procedure” due to the non-medical nature and risk of complications. 

Ultimately, Dr. Unger put him at ease, and — with the support of his family — Robert decided to undergo [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-assisted-liposuction) to his abdomen, back, and love handles. He says that the recovery period, which included bruising and swelling, was much smoother than he anticipated, and he is “very satisfied” with the result. Although he currently has no plans to pursue additional treatment, he’s open to the possibility of having more plastic surgery in the future.

### **Jared**
When Jared* went to visit Dr. Jason following a recommendation from someone at UCLA, he says he “wanted to look better facewise” but “didn’t want to go over the top.” Dr. Jason suggested submental liposuction to alleviate Jared’s concerns about his full chin area, but he was reluctant at first. “I never pictured myself getting surgery, no matter how big or small,” Jared recalls. 

With the support of his family, however, Jared went through with the procedure and says he spent about a week in bed recovering. “I thought I'd have a Frankenstein-like face,” he says. “But the scarring was non-existent!” Despite being very pleased with his results, he has no plans for more cosmetic surgery at this time.

## __Gisele Bündchen on Breast Augmentation__

Once nicknamed “The Boobs from Brazil,” the highly private Bündchen reveals in her memoir that she underwent a [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants) in 2015. The supermodel told People magazine that “I was always praised for my body, and I felt like people had expectations from me that I couldn’t deliver.” The effects of nursing two babies took its toll on both her famous physique and her self-esteem. “I felt very vulnerable,” Bündchen confesses, “because I can work out, I can eat healthy, but I can’t change the fact that both of my kids enjoyed the left boob more than the right. All I wanted was for them to be even and for people to stop commenting on it.” After her plastic surgery, however, Bündchen had second thoughts that she overcame with the help of husband Tom Brady: “He just said, ‘I love you no matter what’ and that I looked beautiful,” she wrote. “This was definitely another lesson: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. But I wish I would have learned that a different way.”

## __Anna Faris on Lip Filler and Breast Augmentation__

In her 2017 memoir, the Mom star admits to receiving [lip injections](https://aedit.com/procedure/semipermanent-lip-fillers) and a [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-fat-transfer) to address two areas that she’d always felt self-conscious about. The outspoken New York rapper has been very vocal about becoming a stripper out of high school, and the ensuing pressure she felt to undergo plastic surgery. Cardi B had breast implant surgery at 19, followed by illegal buttock injections because she didn’t have enough body fat to transfer for a [Brazilian Butt Lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift). In an interview with GQ, she explains, "When I was 21, I did not have enough meat on my body — if I was to get lipo, I wouldn't have fat for my ass." Desperate for a solution, the rapper paid a woman $800 to inject filler into her buttocks. "It was the craziest pain ever,” she says. “I felt like I was gonna pass out. I felt a little dizzy. And it leaks for, like, five days." Despite the pain and risks, the singer made an attempt to go back for a touch-up. "But by the time I was gonna go get it, the lady got locked up 'cause she's supposedly killed somebody.” More recently, the rapper revealed her duct-taped breasts in a viral Instagram video, lamenting that breastfeeding her baby had devastated her curves – and unabashedly announcing that she’d be seeking more plastic surgery to restore their pre-pregnancy shape.

## __Gwyneth Paltrow on Tweakments__

Although she is known for her holistic beauty philosophy, Paltrow is not averse to trying the latest skincare technologies.
