Few beauty ingredients have as much name recognition and staying power as biotin. With its name plastered on [hair care products](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-hair-care-products-by-texture-color) and supplements, the B vitamin is synonymous with Rapunzel’s flowing tresses and strong nails. But is biotin worth its weight in gold? For those who have longed for longer locks, [healthier nails](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-your-nails-say-about-overall-health), and a brighter complexion, the ingredient may prove beneficial. That’s not to say there aren’t some caveats to consider though. Before you go out and stock up on biotin-powered products, here’s what the experts have to say about the water-soluble vitamin. 

## **What Is Biotin?**
In simplest terms, biotin (a.k.a. vitamin B7) is a B vitamin. “The name ‘biotin’ is derived from the Greek word ‘bios,’” says [Amy Spizuoco, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341), a board certified dermatologist and founder of True Dermatology in New York City. ‘Bios’ translates to ‘life’ or ‘sustenance,’ which makes sense when you consider how the vitamin supports metabolic and cellular function. “Also known as vitamin H, biotin is one of the B complex vitamins that help the body convert food into energy,” she adds. 

Unlike some of its fellow vitamins, biotin is not naturally occurring in the body. Instead, “it is a water-soluble vitamin found in many foods, including egg yolk, milk, nuts, grains, and supplements,” explains [Samer Jaber, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/samer-jaber-md-3882), a board certified dermatologist and founder of [Washington Square Dermatology](http://www.washingtonsqderm.com/) in NYC. Furthermore, because it is water-soluble, it is not retained for very long. As such, it requires replenishment and, in some cases, supplementation. 

## **What Does Biotin Do?**
Biotin is more than just a beautifier; it’s an integral part of a healthy diet. Dr. Spizuoco notes that biotin is “an essential vitamin,” which means “your body needs this micronutrient to function properly.” As Dr. Jaber explains, “biotin is a cofactor for important carboxylases that catalyze critical steps in the metabolism of fatty acids, glucose, and amino acids.” Basically, “the biotin you consume in food helps your body turn the food you eat — protein, carbohydrates, and fat — into energy,” Dr. Spizuoco shares. Additionally, biotin “plays key roles in histone modifications, gene regulation, and cell signaling,” Dr. Jaber adds.

## **How Does Biotin Work?**
Now that you have a better sense of what the B vitamin is and how it supports overall health, it’s time to drill down into the aesthetic benefits. More likely than not, you are familiar with biotin because of its purported effects on hair and nail growth. Below is what you need to know about the benefits of biotin for hair, skin, and nails:

### **Biotin For Hair**
First things first: It is true that biotin aids hair health and, yes, growth by strengthening the hair follicle. For this reason, you will likely see it on the ingredient list of many [hair supplements](https://aedit.com/aedition/hair-growth-supplements-for-hair-loss). But it is not a silver bullet and tends to work best when paired with complementary ingredients. If you are looking to treat [hair thinning](https://aedit.com/aedition/tips-for-styling-fine-thinning-hair-from-celebrity-hairstylists) or [hair loss](https://aedit.com/concern/hair-loss), Dr. Jaber cautions that “there is very limited scientific data to support the use of biotin to improve hair loss in healthy individuals.” He notes that a [2018 review article](https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-96221830204-4/fulltext) by Shari Lipner, MD, in the *Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD)* “highlighted that most of the publications on biotin for hair loss are limited cases or small case reports.”

So, what about the biotin in your favorite hair care products? “Topical application of biotin in products, like shampoo and conditioner, helps to enhance scalp health by repairing cracked skin, improving rash, and also by its moisturizing and smoothing effects,” explains Sreerupa Ganguly, PhD, head chemist and formulator at [Pura D’Or](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurador.com%2Fcollections%2Fhaircare).

Like ingestible biotin, topical biotin often works best when paired with other powerhouse ingredients. For men with androgenic alopecia (a.k.a. [male pattern baldness](https://aedit.com/aedition/common-causes-of-hair-loss-balding-thinning-in-men)), “a recent study shows clinical efficacy of topical biotin usage with proven results when compounded with ingredients like [minoxidil](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-use-minoxidil-foam-for-hair-restoration), [finasteride](https://aedit.com/procedure/finasteride-propecia), and caffeine citrate,” Dr. Ganguly shares. And, if you’re worried about split ends, she says the “topical application of biotin improves durability and hair quality by minimizing hair split and breakage.”                           

### **Biotin For Nails**
If you’ve ever taken biotin supplements, you may have noticed your [nails](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-damaged-dry-brittle-finger-nails-cuticles) suddenly growing longer and stronger. “Keratin is one of the main proteins that make up hair and nails, as it lines internal organs and provides structure to many glands,” says Libby Mathews, a certified nutritionist and founder of [Dose & Co](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fus.doseandco.com%2F). As she explains, biotin helps metabolize the amino acids used to build proteins like, you guessed it, keratin. “Since keratin is one of the main components of hair and nails, it means that biotin is important for keeping hair and nails healthy and strong,” she shares.

### **Biotin For Skin**
Biotin is not an ingredient you are going to find in topical skincare products, but Dr. Spizuoco says that having it in your diet benefits the skin. “Enzymes rely on biotin to function, and the vitamin is important for energy production as it helps the formation of fatty acids that nourish the skin,” she explains, adding that “more research is needed to support these claims in healthy individuals.” So, while it may not be consumed specifically for skin benefits, a vitamin B7 deficiency may impact the complexion.  

## **The Right Candidate for Biotin**
Because the vitamin is so readily found in food, a biotin deficiency is quite rare. With that said, Dr. Jaber says it can “result in hair loss, skin rash, and neuromuscular disorders,” and there are some groups who may be more susceptible. “[Pregnant and breastfeeding women](https://aedit.com/aedition/most-common-skin-hair-conditions-during-pregnancy) are more susceptible to a biotin deficiency,” Matthews notes, adding that signs include “brittle nails, hair loss, and skin rashes.”

If you are interested in adding a biotin supplement to your wellness routine, Dr. Jaber recommends consulting with your primary care physician first. “Biotin supplementation can interfere with lab testing results for the heart, thyroid, and hormonal testing,” he says. Additionally, it should be noted that certain B vitamins have been known to exacerbate acne. Those with [acne-prone skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-oily-and-acne-prone-skin) may be at a risk of worsening their condition if they decide to take the supplement, Dr. Spizuoco warns.

## **How to Add Biotin to Your Routine**
Topically adding biotin to your hair care routine doesn’t take much effort. Simply find a product that you like and allow the vitamin to get to work. Those wanting to boost their biotin intake through supplements, however, should search for specific formulations (more on that below) and follow the necessary dietary guidelines. “There is nothing topically to worry about,” Dr. Spizuoco says. “However, when ingested, certain foods can prevent absorption and certain medications such as some antibiotics and anti-seizure medications.” If you have concerns about how this may impact your current routine, it is best to speak with your provider first.  

As we mentioned, vitamin B7 is a pretty common component of most [balanced diets](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-diet-for-healthy-beautiful-skin), but Matthews says that there are certain foods you can try to up your intake. Those include:

- Brewer's yeast
- Cooked eggs (especially egg yolk)
- Nuts (think: almonds, peanuts, pecans, walnuts)
- Nut butters 

“It is also found in beans, soybeans, blackeye peas, whole grains, bananas, mushrooms, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and liver,” she adds.

## **How To Find The Right Biotin Product**
Biotin can be applied topically to treat hair from root to tip, but, when looking for a supplement, Matthews has a few tips for what to keep an eye out for. “Look for a supplement that has a high number of servings in a bottle and is specified to be non-GMO and free from allergen supplements,” she says. 

Just like with skincare, certain ingredients [play well together](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-ingredient-pairings) and the same is true of biotin. Matthews recommends looking for a biotin supplement with collagen and vitamin C to boost the benefits for hair, nails, and skin. While we all strive to be moisturized from the [tops of our heads](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-approved-daytime-moisturizers) to the [soles of our feet](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-a-medical-pedicure), our tootsies often prove to be a bit more challenging when it comes to hydration. The reason? We’re constantly putting pressure on our feet, which often leads the already dry skin on our heels and soles to harden and thicken. Dry and callused feet can also manifest as the result of hormonal changes, environmental factors, and even wearing closed shoes and socks.

The good news is that there is plenty you can do to soothe, soften, and save your tired feet, and we talked to a board certified foot and ankle surgeon and a licensed medical pedicurist for their expert advice. Here’s what you need to know about at-home foot care treatments.

## **1. Foot Soaks**
The skin on your feet is thicker than the skin on the rest of your body, and a soak can help soften dry skin before removing it. There are plenty of sumptuous soaks on the market, but simply submerging your feet for 20 minutes in warm soapy water will do the trick. The temperature of the water is actually the most important factor. Water that’s too cold won’t yield the results you need, while scorching hot water will be uncomfortable and unsafe. A water temperature between 92 degrees and 100 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal, but, if you don’t have a thermometer, you’ll know you hit the sweet spot when the water is toasty without stinging your feet. 

While soaking your feet in water is generally considered safe and effective, you should consult with your doctor if you have open wounds, sores, or suffer from dry feet as the result of a medical condition like diabetes. It’s also important to follow up a soak with a moisturizing lotion or balm (more on that below!) or you run the risk of exacerbating any dryness or cracking.

### **Paraffin Wax Treatments**
If you are looking for a more spa-like take on the classic soak, paraffin wax treatments replace water with a cozy wax bath. “Because it’s a natural emollient, wax adds moisture when applied to the skin, creating a barrier that helps your body retain the oils that it naturally produces,” says [William Spielfogel, DPM](https://www.hamiltonpodiatry.com/), chief of podiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital-Northwell Health and co-founder of [Dr.’s Remedy Nail Care](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.remedynails.com%2F). As he explains, paraffin wax is “often used as a physical therapy modality for painful joints in people with arthritis.” On the cosmetic end of the spectrum, “it can help to keep the skin moist and soft,” he adds.

Paraffin waxes are popular in [professional treatments](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-treatments-procedures-for-feet-nails-toes), but they’re also safe for at-home use, provided you follow the instructions on your device to the tee. Generally speaking, you’ll heat up wax in a small tub, then dip your feet (hands and/or elbows work, too) in the tub several times to create a thick layer of wax on your feet. You can then peel the wax off *or* prolong the nourishing benefits by wrapping your feet in plastic or towels and letting it set before removing it. 

Like water baths, Dr. Spielgofel says to make sure the temperature of the wax isn’t too hot; avoid areas with any open wounds; and, if you have an underlying condition like poor blood circulation or numbness in the hands or feet, consult with your doctor first. As for timing, Marcela Correa, a licensed medical pedicurist and founder of [Medi Pedi NYC](https://medipedinyc.com/), suggests a weekly paraffin treatment — especially during the winter months when skin is driest.

The same way [manual (a.k.a. physical) exfoliation](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-ways-to-exfoliate-body-skincare-scrubs-dry-brush) can smooth the skin on your face and body, your feet can also benefit from a good scrub. However, there’s one thing to keep in mind before scouring your dry trotters: Be gentle! While we’re all guilty of grabbing a foot file and going to town, the skin on your feet is not as indestructible as it looks. Your movements should be vigorous but not rough, and, if you feel any pain or discomfort, slow down or stop completely. 

### **Pumice Stones**
Pumice stones are one of the most popular foot exfoliation methods, and the power of the small but mighty stone lies in the fact that pumice is a [type of volcanic rock](https://mineralseducationcoalition.org/minerals-database/pumice/) that is formed when frothy lava cools and hardens. Pumice stones should always be coupled with a foot soak, but many people don’t know that you also need to soak the actual pumice stone as well, as a dry pumice stone will be too abrasive for safe usage. 

After soaking your feet and the pumice stone, rub the stone across the soles of your feet in a light but firm manner, paying special attention to the areas that are experiencing the most dryness. This should take no more than five minutes, and you can repeat this process weekly. Afterwards, rinse and moisturize your feet, wash the pumice stone with soap and water, and then set it aside to dry completely. These last two steps are essential to avoid bacteria buildup on the stone. 

### **Foot Files**
Foot files are another great option for dry and/or callused feet. They can be made of metal, stainless steel, ceramic, or even glass, which make them less prone to bacteria concerns than pumice stones. Depending on the file, it may be able to be used on wet *or* dry skin, so be sure to read the directions first! 

To avoid damaging healthy skin, Correa says to always apply moisturizer first. From there, buff in the same direction as any cracks with a single-use foot file. She tells clients to do this once a week for best results.

## **3. Chemical Exfoliation**
When you think about [chemical exfoliation](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-at-home-chemical-peels-exfoliators) on the feet, you probably think of the ever-popular [Baby Foot](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.babyfoot.com%2Fstore%2Fproducts%2Fbaby-foot.html), which, full disclosure, I love. Foot peels often use a combination of [alpha hydroxy acids](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-alpha-hydroxy-acids-in-skincare) and [beta hydroxy acids](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-beta-hydroxy-acids-salicylic-acid-in-skincare) (think: glycolic, lactic, salicylic) to kickstart that intense dead skin shedding process. While the experience can be deeply satisfying, not all experts are convinced it’s the best way to care for the feet.

Correa, for one, doesn’t recommend foot peels for her patients. “When it comes to skin and calluses, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach,” she says. “Not all dead skin is meant to be removed, and by using a peel that targets all areas, you're risking hyper-sensitivity to the already healthy areas of your foot.” Another problem with at-home peels? They can lead to missed diagnoses. “Most people who are self-diagnosing at home might confuse skin abnormalities such as [psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-live-with-and-treat-psoriasis), [eczema](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-products-to-treat-eczema-flare-ups-in-the-winter), or warts as normal calluses,” she shares. If you do decide to go ahead with a foot peel, she advocates for consulting with an expert first to make sure it’s the right treatment option for you. 

While Dr. Spielfogel has similar reservations, he ultimately believes foot peels are safe for most people. “Anyone with underlying medical issues such as diabetes or poor circulation should consult their podiatrist or PCP before attempting any type of peel,” he says. “But, for most people, Baby Foot is safe.” There are, however, some key exceptions. “It should not be used if you have any open wounds or sores, and I do not recommend it if someone has eczema or sensitive skin,” he adds. 

With a chemical foot peel, you’ll put your feet inside the peeling ‘shoes’ provided in the package (some brands recommend a foot soak first) for about an hour. After the allotted time, rinse off the solution and mentally prepare for your feet to begin peeling in about four to five days. Daily soaks will speed up the peeling process, but please be warned: The peeling is pretty dramatic. Expect to find dead skin and flakes on your sheets and in your socks and know that your feet will look pretty dry and flaky for a week or two. Needless to say, it’s best to do a foot peel *before* sandal season.

Timing wise, foot peels are not meant to be used weekly or even monthly. At most, schedule your peels for about twice a year.

If you’re looking for the simplest place to start an at-home foot care routine, regular moisturizing with a foot cream is it. An effective moisturizer is the key to keeping the skin healthy and strong, and it can and should be paired with any of the treatments mentioned above. 

Popular foot hydrators include glycerin and [ceramides](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-ceramides-in-skincare) (yes, the same ones that work wonders on your face), and Correa also recommends finding a formula with urea — a humectant that hydrates by drawing water from the deeper layers of your skin and the air. Oh, and it had a dual benefit. “Footcare products with urea are great for both exfoliating and moisturizing because it breaks down the protein keratin in the outer layer of your skin to help reduce dead skin buildup and get rid of flaking or scaling skin,” she explains.

Dr. Spielfogel likes foot creams with glycolic acid for a similar reason. The fruit acid sloughs off dead skin cells while it nourishes. He suggests slathering it on at bedtime and then sleeping with socks for maximum penetration. And while lotions often are great for quick absorption, your feet can likely benefit from a heavier hydrator like a [rich cream, balm, or salve](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-creams-lotions-moisturizers).

When I got my first set of acrylic nails at the tender of age of 16 (I’m from Jersey, so that should explain it), I had no idea the day would turn into years of salon visits, hours of research for new designs, and, of course, the endless times I entertained myself by rapping my nails on the sides of desks and tables to hear that reassuring tap-tapping sound. 

The start of [COVID-19](https://aedit.com/aedition/moderna-covid-19-vaccine-dermal-filler-swelling) stay-at-home orders came right after I had gotten my nails done, so I was able to hang on for about a month or so until I had to soak my hands in acetone and ponder my next step. My years of nail experience definitely came in handy when I switched to press-ons, but some nail newbies may need a little direction to get a secure and long-lasting application. Read on to learn everything you need to know about at-home press-on nails.

## **How to Prep Your Nails for Press-Ons**
The most common mistake people make when applying press-on nails? They don’t prep their nails first, says Yewande Moore, founder and CEO of [Nail Candy](https://nailcandypressons.com/). Think about it: When you head to a nail salon to get acrylics, gel nails, or just a regular manicure, there’s a lot of prep that needs to happen before a drop or nail polish or glue touches your nails, and it should be the same for press-ons. Here is how to up your press-on prep game:

- **Find Your Fit**: Test the press-ons and make sure they fit your natural nails. While most nail brands either offer custom sizes or include an array of options in each set, you may need to gently file down the sides for a better fit.
- **Buff the Back**: Lightly buff the back of each press-on nail with a buffer. This step is not necessary for nails that come with adhesive.
- **Clean Your Nail Beds**: Remove any nail polish on your nails, then file and cut them down as needed.
- **Care for Your Cuticles**: Push your cuticles back to ensure maximum surface area.
- **Buff Your Beds**: Gently buff the surface of your nail to remove excess oils or lotions and create a rougher surface for the nail to stick to. Some press on kits may also come with an acetone prep pad that will help remove any remaining residue. 

Now that you're prepped and ready to go, it’s time to learn about the application process.

## **How to Apply Press-On Nails**
Timing matters when it comes to putting on press-on nails. As Moore explains, applying your nails before bed will allow them to completely set before you resume normal activity and get your nails wet. Depending the brand you choose, your press-on set may come with glue, prefabricated adhesive tabs, or both. My personal preference is to skip the tabs and go for the glue — even if you only plan on wearing your nails for a short period of time — as glue offers more security. With that in mind, here’s how to apply your nails:

1. Apply a light drop of glue to both the center of your nail bed and the press-on nail
2. Line up the press-on nail, starting at the base of your natural nail and then press down
3. Hold pressure for about 15 to 20 seconds to ensure it’s secure
4. Alternate hands when applying your nails for better control (i.e. don’t apply one hand and then the other)

When it comes to glue, Moore notes that people tend to use too much. While you may think you’re extending the life of the manicure, she recommends a “less is more” approach (as outlined above) for best results. 

## **How to Remove Press-On Nails**
Depending on the type of nails and your lifestyle, press-on nails can last upwards of two to three weeks. You’ll know it’s time to remove them when they start to lift slightly. It’s important to remove them once you feel them lifting, as strands of hair, water, and other debris can enter and further soften the glue. We’re breaking down how to remove press-ons safely:

- **Soak Them Off**: Soak your nails in a bowl of warm water for five to 10 minutes (note: it can take longer if the glue underneath your nail is still hard).
- **Add Something Extra**: Brittney Boyce, celebrity nail artist and founder of [Nails of LA](https://www.nailsofla.com/), recommends rubbing something emollient, like coconut oil, on your nails to aid in removal.
- **Side to Side**: As you soak, gently move the press-on nail from side to side (without force) to avoid damage.
- **Remove Remaining Glue**: Once the nails are off, lightly buff your natural nail to remove any excess glue.
- **Avoid Acetone**: While acetone soaks remove gel polish and acrylics, they will damage both your natural nail and the press-on nail so you can’t reuse them.

It's important to be as careful removing your press-ons as your were applying them. When not removed properly, press-on nails can damage the natural nails and, in extreme cases, rip them off completely.

## **How to Take Care of Your Nails Between Press-On Applications**

Why Press-On Nails Are The Key To An Amazing At-Home Manicure

Hand sanitizer has always been a convenient substitute for [traditional hand washing](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-wash-hands-best-creams-tips-to-prevent-dry-skin) in a pinch. But since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s become an essential (like [face coverings](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-acne-caused-by-covid-19-masks-face-coverings)) that many people don’t leave their homes without. Because of hand sanitizer, we feel more comfortable doing everyday tasks like filling our gas tanks or grabbing takeout. Anyone who has applied the stuff consistently throughout the day, however, knows that it can have [drying and irritating effects](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-dry-skin-face-body-hands) on the skin. 

So, what is the best way to use hand sanitizer safely and effectively without wreaking havoc on your [hands](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-you-need-to-know-about-hand-rejuvenation), [nails](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-damaged-dry-brittle-finger-nails-cuticles), and skin? We’ve tapped two top experts for advice.

## **Hand Washing vs. Hand Sanitizer** 
First things first: it’s important to understand the difference between washing your hands and sanitizing them. Using antibacterial hand sanitizer was inevitable in 2020. And it’s here to stay for at least part of 2021, too. But that’s not to say hand sanitizer can replace hand washing. 

If you have access to soap and water, then you absolutely should wash your hands the old fashioned way. “It's always better to wash with soap and water and to apply a moisturizer immediately after,” says [Amy Spizuoco, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. As helpful as hand sanitizer can be in eliminating germs, it can’t remove grime in the same way washing can.

There are certainly situations, however, in which hand sanitizer is the only option. “If you don't have quick access to soap and water, be sure to use hand sanitizer after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, before eating food, after using the bathroom, and before touching your face at all,” advises [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), a New York City-based board certified dermatologist. 

With this background in mind, read on for hand sanitizer tips from two dermatologists:

### **Tip 1: Moderation Is Key** 
Hand sanitizer is in most of our purses, backpacks, and cars... *for good reason*. As we live our ‘new normal,’ we often find ourselves in situations with dirty hands and without access to soap and running water. Fortunately, we have hand sanitizer to kill germs and move on with our day with peace of mind. In most instances, using an antimicrobial hand sanitizer is totally okay and recommended. Occasional use of hand sanitizers is harmless, but obsessive or frequent use can damage the skin. 

One of the sensitizing culprits is alcohol, which can cause dryness and skin irritation. “The types of alcohol found in hand sanitizers — ethyl alcohol (ethanol) or isopropyl alcohol — can be harsh and irritating for the skin,” Dr. Engelman explains. “But that's unfortunately the trade off for killing germs!”

The three main active ingredients in hand sanitizers (ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and benzalkonium chloride) are under [safety review](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-issues-final-rule-safety-and-effectiveness-consumer-hand-sanitizers) by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but are generally recognized as safe and effective. The FDA [banned the ingredient triclosan](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/5-things-know-about-triclosan) from hand sanitizers in 2017 due to potential health risks (some as serious as skin cancer and antibiotic resistance).

While there are some side effects of using hand sanitizer, there is one myth our dermatologists are here to bust. Despite what is commonly believed, sanitizer does not make skin more sensitive to UV light and susceptible to sun damage. “Some think it’s because the alcohol in hand sanitizers dry out and thin the skin, but this doesn't actually make your skin more sensitive to UV,” Dr. Spizuoco says. Even so, sun protection should already be a part of your [hand care routine](https://aedit.com/aedition/aesthetic-treatments-for-aging-hands). “It is always a good idea to use a moisturizer with sunscreen every day on hands that are exposed to the sun,” she adds.

### **Tip 2: Use a Dermatologist-Approved Hand Sanitizer**
Not all hand sanitizer is created equal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [recommends](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/hand-sanitizer.html) alcohol contents of at least 60 percent ethyl alcohol (ethanol) or 70 percent isopropyl alcohol for hand sanitizers. But that’s not to say the formula can’t also include some skin-soothing extras. 

To combat the harsh alcohols, Dr. Engelman recommends choosing a formula that also contains nourishing ingredients. “There are gentler hand sanitizers that are formulated with hydrating ingredients, like aloe vera, so they are less harsh on your skin — especially as we're all using them more these days,” she says. Below are two of her go-to hand sanitizer brands: 

- **[CBD for Life](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcbdforlife.us%2Fhand-sanitizers%2F)**: “I love CBD for Life products, so I was excited when they came out with hemp seed extract-infused hand sanitizers,” she says. “They come in [gel](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcbdforlife.us%2Fproducts%2Fhand-sanitizing-gel-1) and [spray](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcbdforlife.us%2Fproducts%2Fhand-sanitizing-spray) in different sizes, so you can pick what is most convenient for you.” The formulas contain 70 percent ethanol alcohol, in addition to hemp seed extract and aloe leaf juice. 
- **[Touchland](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ulta.com%2Fbrand%2Ftouchland)**: “These hand sanitizers are not only cute, but they come in eight different fragrances, so you don't have to worry about the overpowering alcohol smell,” Dr. Engelman shares. They contain 67 percent ethyl alcohol, plus aloe vera and essential oils, to keep skin sanitized and moisturized without a sticky film. 

While some hand sanitizers might be better at combatting dry skin, all sanitizers have the same goal: Kill harmful bacteria. Dr. Engelman says it’s important to check the alcohol concentration on your bottle to ensure it meets the CDC minimums. 

### **Tip 3: Don’t Forget to Moisturize**
Whether you’re washing your hands or applying hand sanitizer, keeping your skin hydrated is essential (check out our [guide to dermatologist-approved hand creams](https://aedit.com/aedition/dermatologist-approved-hand-creams-for-dry-skin)). “I recommend having moisturizer right next to hand soap at the sink and keeping a travel-size moisturizer with you at all times,” Dr. Spizuoco shares. 

And remember: there is no such thing as too much moisturizing. “Moisturize as many times as you wash your hands a day — or more,” she says. This is especially true for frequent hand sanitizer users. “There's really nothing you can avoid in hand sanitizers,” she explains. “What makes them work is the alcohol, and that is always the culprit that dries out the hands.”

3 Dermatologist Tips For Using Hand Sanitizer On Dry Skin

Despite the fact that I have heard from many friends and colleagues that they felt perfectly safe [going to a nail salon](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-visit-a-nail-salon-during-covid-19) for a manicure and/or pedicure during the COVID-19 pandemic, I haven’t made it in for a service. In fact, I haven’t had a professional pedicure since the summer of 2019. Yes, I am a beauty editor who loves to paint her [fingernails](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-damaged-dry-brittle-finger-nails-cuticles) on a weekly basis and methodically layers creams and balms on her hands every night while pretty much neglecting everything that happens below the ankles.

For context, I live in New York City (which means I walk just about everywhere) and my go-to form of exercise during the pandemic has been socially distanced runs around my neighborhood. Needless to say, my [feet](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-treatments-procedures-for-feet-nails-toes) have seen better days. So, you can imagine my delight when I was invited to [Medi Pedi](https://medipedinyc.com/) — the midtown Manhattan mecca for medical-grade pedicures — to try the signature “medicure” service that is customized for every client depending on their needs.

## **What Is a Medical Pedicure?**
For starters, you might be wondering what differentiates a medical-grade pedicure from one you would get at your local nail salon. Perhaps the most obvious distinctions are the lack of water and nail polish, though there is plenty more that make medical pedicures unique. “Medical nail technicians are trained to detect and treat harder to deal with ailments like athlete’s foot, fungus, corns, and more,” explains [Marcela Correa](https://medipedinyc.com/about-1), a licensed professional medical pedicurist and founder of Medi Pedi. “Even when it comes to basic nail cutting, knowing the proper technique will prevent the nail from getting ingrown and causing the client more trouble in the end.” 

Whether you take great care in tending to your feet or treat them more as an afterthought, little issues can turn into bigger problems if they are not addressed properly. “More often than not, the reason why small ailments turn into more dangerous ones is due to lack of knowledge,” Correa says. “When getting a medical pedicure, not only do your feet get the makeover they need, you leave with the knowledge of how to maintain them healthy for a longer period of time.” 

A medical pedicure also has both immediate and long-term effects. “The treatment has many amazing benefits, with the main one being the prevention of serious infections,” Correa shares. The hygienic standards are — surprise, surprise — medical-grade, which assures the treatment is safe and effective for everyone (including those with underlying medical conditions like diabetes, she says). “Not worrying about if your tools are clean or if your nail tech knows about that weird thing on your nail gives you room to relax and enjoy the experience,” Correa adds.

## **The Treatment**
When I arrived at Medi Pedi, I was greeted by the masked office manager who immediately took my temperature and offered me hand sanitizer. I was then whisked away to my treatment room as to avoid unnecessary interaction with other clients. While Correa and her team have made some adjustments during the COVID-19 pandemic, hygiene and privacy have always been a priority.

Correa describes her signature service as “a facial for your feet.” I would liken it to a no-frills facial —  you know, the kind that is all about results — in the best way. The non-invasive, dry treatment lasts about an hour and focuses on the hygiene and aesthetics of the toenails and soles of the feet. It can target and treat athlete’s foot, corns, calluses, dry and cracked heels, ingrown and overgrown toenails, [nail fungus](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-your-nails-say-about-overall-health), nail discoloration, and more.

### **Step 1**: Cutting & Filing the Nails
Correa’s long-time associate Alejandra began my treatment by asking me if I was experiencing any pain, as she creamed my heels and placed (ingenious) silicone slings on top. I was not, and she quickly got to work manually cutting and filing my nails and cuticles. When she noticed pesky corns on each of my pinky toes, she cut them out with ease.

### **Step 2**: Buffing the Nails & Cuticles 
Next up? The electric nail file to buff my nails and remove the buildup of dry, dead skin. There were different attachments used for different toes, and she asked me to tell her if I experienced any pain or discomfort along the way (I didn’t). I had a small crack in my right big toenail that she was able to smooth, and the file removed all traces of surface stains from the nail plate. A dollop of cuticle oil on each toe started to rehydrate the freshly filed skin around my nail beds, and she finished up this part of the process by removing the silicone slings from my heels.

### **Step 3**: The Diagnosis 
At this point, Correa came into the room and immediately detected the very early stages of athlete’s foot on my soles. She recommended I pick up an over-the-counter antifungal cream on the way home to nip it in the bud (needless to say, I took her advice). She also asked if I walk around barefoot at home. I sheepishly told her I do. She thanked me for my honesty and told me she could tell. Even so, she said my feet were in good shape. I thought she might be trying to make me feel better, but Alejandra confirmed the damage was mostly cosmetic.

### **Step 4**: Buffing the Bottoms
Now it was time to focus on the bottoms of my feet. Correa applied moisturizer (a must before buffing, as not to damage healthy skin) and got to work on my heels with a single-use foot file. She recommends her clients do this once a week at home, filing in the same direction as the cracks. Her one rule? Skip the pumice stone because it harbors bacteria. She buffed my soles as well, and it’s safe to say they’ve never been smoother. All the while, she placed my shoes under a UV lamp for 15 minutes to kill any bacteria that was causing them to be, in her words, “sick.” 

### **Step 5**: Finishing Touches

## **The Verdict**
Nearly two months later, all traces of athlete’s foot are gone, my cuticles remain crisp, and my toenails are still shining bright like diamonds. Correa says she sees clients with painful ingrown nails and corns every four to six weeks — but every three months will do for most. I, for one, can’t wait to go back.

As a result, the hands are among the first places on the body to show signs of aging. Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken at home and in office to restore a more youthful appearance. ## **When to Start Caring for Your Hands**

Some of the most common aesthetic hand concerns include:

- Uneven skin tone (think: age spots and hyperpigmentation)
- Uneven skin texture (i.e. thin, crepey skin)

As we often preach, [sunscreen](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-apply-sunscreen-and-not-miss-a-spot) is a daily necessity — but it’s not just for the face. “Unprotected sun exposure is a no-no,” Dr. Chmielewski says. But SPF isn’t the only protection your hands require. “If you work in extreme environments or with harsh products, gloves should be worn to protect your hands,” she adds. Experts say that there are a handful of medical conditions — some serious, some not — that can show up on our fingertips. To save you the trouble of Googling those nail abnormalities (because, ew), we’ve asked the experts to break down what our nails are trying to tell us about our health. 

## **What a ‘Normal’ Nail Looks Like**
Let’s be clear: we’re here to educate, not to help you self-diagnose. But, before we can talk about nail health warning signs, we need to establish what’s normal and expected. Our nails (both fingernails and toenails) are made up of layers of a protein called keratin — the same substance found in our hair and our skin’s outermost layer. The visible part of your nails is actually dead, which is why cutting them doesn’t hurt.

### **The Anatomy of the Nail:**

New nail cells begin growing inside the matrix (the hidden part of the nail beneath the bottom edge) and push the old ones through your skin as they grow out. Healthy nails are uniform in color and texture — without pits, grooves, spots, or discoloration. Although the size and shape of the nail bed and nail thickness varies from person to person, nails should be gently convex and extend outward off the tips of the fingers.

## **What Nails Say About Our Health**
“Healthy nails equal a healthy body,” says [Morgan Rabach, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/morgan-rabach-md-17913), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. Nails can be indicators of both medical conditions and skin disorders. “Nails can be the first sign of an underlying medical condition, like thyroid disease, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disorders, certain cancers, and malnutrition,” she explains. “There are also many skin disorders, like psoriasis and eczema, where there are nail findings.”

The appearance of the nails can also be an indication of how well we take care of ourselves. “Our nails are a direct reflection of our nutrition,” says [Megan Rigby, PNP, DNP](https://themacromini.com/), a nutritionist and wellness coach in Phoenix, AZ. As she explains it, what you’re putting into your body is a direct reflection of what you see on the outside. “How we nourish and hydrate our body is directly seen in our overall nail health,” she shares.

## **What Your Nails May Be Telling You** 
Chances are, you’ve experienced some of the more typical nail issues (think: dry, brittle nails, particularly during winter or in very arid climates). Depressions, pits, bruises, or white spots can all occur as a result of injury to the nail plate or nail bed. And, as we age, vertical ridges along the nails become increasingly present. Fungal infections (more common on the toenails), which cause nail discoloration and malformation, are another common nail condition that isn’t typically too concerning — unless, of course, you don’t treat it.

So, is there a rule of thumb (pun intended) to determine if your nail issue is relatively harmless or something more serious? “Any change in shape, growth pattern, or color of your nail should be sought out by a board certified dermatologist,” Dr. Rabach cautions. Here, we overview some of the signs that can show up on our fingertips:

### **1. Pale Nails**
Nails that are unusually pale can indicate a lack of hemoglobin (a protein that carries oxygen in the blood) in red blood cells or a lack of red blood cells in general. This could be caused by a variety of health conditions, including anemia, congestive heart failure, liver disease, and malnutrition.

### **2. White Nails**
Nails that are mostly white with a rim of color are also known as ‘Terry’s Nails’ — named after the doctor who first described them in 1954. They are associated with liver conditions like hepatitis and cirrhosis, as well as various kidney diseases and human immunodeficiency disease.

### **3. Yellow Nails**
Although commonly caused by a fungal infection (see above) or polish-stained nail plates, yellow nails can also be a sign of chronic lung disease (more common in smokers), severe thyroid disease, diabetes, a vitamin deficiency, or psoriasis. If the condition is accompanied by nail malformation, respiratory abnormalities, and lymphedema (swelling), it may be an indication of an extremely rare (and possibly genetic) disorder known as yellow nail syndrome.

### **4. Blue Nails**
If nails take on a bluish hue, that’s an indication that they’re not getting enough oxygen. This condition, known as cyanosis, could simply be the result of cold exposure. If it persists, it could be a reflection of a larger circulatory issue. Common causes include deep vein thrombosis, Raynaud’s phenomenon, lymphedema, heart failure, venous or arterial insufficiency, severe hypotension (low blood pressure). It could also be a sign of lung trouble, like emphysema, asthma, pneumonia, or a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung).

### **5. White Spots**
Contrary to popular belief, white spots or lines appearing in the nails aren’t the result of a calcium deficiency. The condition, technically known as leukonychia, is most commonly associated with injury to the nail bed — either from an accident or manicure/pedicure damage. Sometimes, it can be a sign of malnutrition, but not a lack of calcium.

### **6. Dark Lines or Spots Underneath Nails**
Unless caused by an acute injury, a dark streak running vertically under nails should be examined by a doctor right away, as it could be a sign of a type of skin cancer known as subungual melanoma. If left unchecked, it can spread to your lymph nodes. Sometimes, black or brown lines can be the result of other conditions like heart problems, lupus, vasculitis, fungal infection, psoriasis, Raynaud’s syndrome, or lung, kidney, or circulatory problems.

### **7. Spoon Nails**
Also known as koilonychia, this abnormality causes the nail to have a concave, scooped out appearance that can be deep enough to hold a drop of liquid. Spoon nails can be caused by iron deficiency anemia, says Dr. Rabach. Underlying causes include malnutrition, celiac disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, and a liver condition called hemochromatosis, which causes an overload of iron in the body.

### **8. Cracked, Brittle, or Split Nails**
Nails that are dry, peel easily, or seem brittle or thin may be damaged from weather or from too much nail polish. But they may also be showing signs of something more serious. The condition — technically known as onychoschizia — could be the result of vitamin deficiencies, anemia, or hypothyroidism.

### **9. Slow-Growing Nails**
Fun fact: nails grow more slowly in wintertime. But stress (both physical and psychological) can slow down nail growth, as well. Studies show that elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol can cause changes in our nails, which can be exacerbated by nervous, damaging habits like rubbing fingers over our nail plates.

### **10. Dented Nails**
“Beau’s lines — a horizontal dent that goes through the middle of the nail — can be a sign of high fever or other infections,” Dr. Rabach says. First diagnosed by French physician Joseph Beau in 1846, these depressions (formed as a result of trauma to the area beneath the cuticle) can also indicate vascular disease, diabetes, and vitamin deficiency.

### **11. Pitted or Rippled Nails**
If nails take on an orange peel appearance, it could be the result of an injury, or it might be a sign of psoriasis — especially if the pitting is accompanied by changes in shape, thickness, or color. Pitted nails are also a sign of eczema, or certain autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata and inflammatory arthritis.

### **12. Clubbed Nails**
This condition is characterized by an enlargement of the fingertips and a curving of the nails around the edge of the fingers. “Clubbing is a sign of diseases where being well-oxygenated is a problem, like lung cancer or asthma, or heart diseases,” Dr. Rabach shares.

### **13. Puffy, Red Cuticles**
If the skin surrounding the nail becomes red, inflamed, or painful, it could be a sign of an infection known as paronychia. Swelling in the nail bed in combination with small, discolored spots and/or nail malformation can also be indicative of lupus.

## **The Takeaway**
“Nails are an important clue to internal disease and could be a presenting sign,” Dr. Rabach says. It is also important to remember that nails can have intrinsic disease, like melanoma. So, if you are someone who keeps your fingers and toes polished at all times, be sure to examine them on occasion and discuss any dramatic changes with a dermatologist. If you are looking to strengthen your nails, Dr. Rigby says you should first consider your diet. “It’s essential to eat an appropriate amount of protein and iron,” she shares. “Whether this is animal or plant based, protein is an essential component to the health of our hair, skin, and nails.”

As soon as I heard that beauty salons would be reopening in my area on Monday, June 22, I made an appointment at my local nail salon for a manicure and pedicure for that very Wednesday night. As a beauty editor and someone who loves having her nails painted with [Essie Wicked](https://www.essie.com/nail-polish/enamel/reds/wicked) time and time again, making the appointment seemed like a no-brainer. I *had* to get in ASAP or else I’d continue to eat my cuticles.  

When the day came and the afternoon turned to evening, however, I began getting anxious. As someone who’s kept a very tight circle of family throughout the coronavirus pandemic and hasn’t so much as gone to a store, this was actually a *huge* move. For the first time since March, I’d be  inside with strangers for an extended period of time.

We all have a fear of the unknown, which leads to great anxiety. In writing this piece, I’m not trying to encourage anyone to do anything out of their comfort zone. But I hope sharing my experience with those of you who intend to resume your standing mani/pedi appointment may be helpful to lessen some of the trepidation.

Like hair salons (more on those reopenings [HERE](https://aedit.com/aedition/safety-protocols-at-hair-salons-reopening-after-covid-19)), the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has [created a protocol](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/organizations/nail-salon-employers.html) for nail salons to follow during this time. The guidelines include:

- Move, change, or adjust workstations to help workers maintain social distance of six feet (where that much space isn’t possible, they’re to install physical barriers)
- Remove chairs from the waiting area to make sure people don’t sit too close
- Screen clients for COVID-19 symptoms
- Stagger shifts, start times, and break times of employees
- Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces with at least 70 percent alcohol
- Advise employees to wear gloves and masks
- Provide disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer
- Use single-use supplies
- Limit the number of people in the salon at one time
- Encourage clients to wait outside the salon until it’s their turn
- Post signs and reminders about wearing masks

When it was time for my appointment, I went. I wasn’t sure if I would stay or get one service instead of the two I booked so that I could get in and out quicker. I arrived five minutes early wearing my [tie-dye Sydne Summer face mask](https://www.sydnestyle.com/2020/06/face-mask-chains/) and was greeted by a technician wearing an N95 mask at the door. She took my name and told me I had to wait outside until my manicurist was ready for me. There was also a sign on the door that read, “Face mask required. By Appointment Only.” I peeked through the windows and saw that the salon was almost empty, so I decided to move forward with my appointment.  

When I got inside, I noticed plexiglass barriers were placed at the reception desk and manicure and pedicure stations. The latter had cut-outs for clients to place their hands and feet. The salon was pristine (it usually is) and hand sanitizer was abundant. I was welcomed by the team of nail technicians, and it was wonderful to see familiar faces. You can tell people are smiling just by making eye contact, and we all were. They asked for my daughter (who I normally bring with me, but decided not to given the circumstances) and told me what it was like to be back at work. They were grateful to be open, and it felt good to be a part of my community — even in this small way.

Normally, the salon can work on 22 people at a time, but there were only six other customers with me. They were utilizing every other station, and the ones in between were marked with an ‘X’ as a reminder not to sit someone there. Besides the structural changes, I went in with an editor’s eye and noticed small changes, too, that made a huge difference in my comfort level. The salon was using individualized packets of exfoliant and lotion instead of the usual jumbo-sized tubs (using single-use supplies is on the list of guidelines from the CDC).

I follow several beauty salons that my friends own or work at and saw that some are going as far as to do temperature checks before customers walk in the door. While my salon didn’t screen *me* for symptoms, I saw them taking the temperatures of other clients before they walked in.  They held a sensor thermometer to their forehead that didn’t even touch their skin. If they had taken my temperature, it would have been a homerun. But nobody’s perfect, and they were certainly trying. I guess I went in with faith that everyone in there was healthy — at least I really hope they were.

As I sit here typing with my fresh oxblood mani, I’m pleased to report that my experience was a positive one. The salon followed every single guideline listed above, which instantly put me at ease. If your go-to salon already had a clean and professional reputation before the virus and you’re interested in making an appointment, I’d say go for it. You can always turn around and go home if you feel uncomfortable. But, if you’re ready, it’s nice to support small businesses as the economy reopens. 

I conducted an [Instagram poll](https://www.instagram.com/jeannine_morris/) asking my followers if they were ready to go to beauty salons yet and 67 percent of them said yes. With that said, I completely understand that, for many, it’s not worth the risk. Take your time and do what feels right for you. Afterall, beauty treatments are far from essential.

With stay-at-home orders lifting in many states, visiting a beauty salon for a mani/pedi is once again possible. But is it worth the risk?

## **Lash Extensions**

[Eyelash extensions](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-eyelash-extensions) need at least 24 hours to set and some people find that the lashes can start shedding as early as two weeks. Scheduling your appointment with a local lash technician anywhere from three to seven days before the wedding will ensure they are in tip-top shape. Oh, and don’t forget to factor in a patch test. If you have never had eyelash extensions or you haven’t had a treatment in the six months, you will likely need to go in for an allergy test 24 to 48 hours before your treatment. Once your faux fringe is in place, remember to remind your makeup artist that you won’t need mascara on the big day.

## **Hair Removal**
Sure, laser hair removal takes months, but [waxing](https://aedit.com/procedure/waxing), shaving, and [threading](https://aedit.com/procedure/threading) can all happen in the days before the wedding. In addition to body hair removal, now is the time to touch up your brows with a professional shaping. Brides and grooms will want to leave a few days in between waxing and the wedding day so that any irritation or redness can fade (note: this holds true for any treatments targeting the face or other parts of the body that you may want to flaunt during your wedding weekend!). 

While it is tempting to get waxed a week or two before your big day — especially if you are celebrating your bachelor or bachelorette party — just remember that your hair will need to be at least a quarter of an inch long to treat. With that in mind, resist shaving or waxing for the week prior to your wedding hair removal appointment. Grooms who are planning for a professional shave in the days leading up to the ceremony should check in with their groomer to see if there are any additional skincare or haircare steps that should be taken prior to treatment. 

## **Faux Glow**
If you are looking to get a little color before your wedding day, a spray tan is a sun-safe alternative to a natural tan. By now, [you should have already tested out](https://aedit.com/aedition/wedding-beauty-timeline-cosmetic-surgery-procedures-3-months-before) different tanning options and have settled on the exact shade, product, and technician. You will also want to practice a good body care routine of exfoliating (i.e. removing dead skin cells) and moisturizing to avoid any blotchiness and help your tan last longer.

We suggest scheduling your spray tan appointment two to three days ahead of your wedding. Not only will this give you enough time to fix it if anything should go wrong but also you will have some color for pre-wedding festivities like the rehearsal dinner. When booking your appointment, schedule it at least 24 hours after any hair removal appointments to ensure a smooth, even result.

Most professional and at-home self-tanners take at least a few hours to set. Since the product can rub off in the early stages, we urge brides or grooms to avoid tanning the morning of the wedding. On the flip side, don’t plan it too far out. Some people start to see their tan fade around a week after the treatment — especially on areas that are frequently washed (like the hands and face).

## **Hair Cut & Color**
With a week to go, it is high time to tend to your ‘do.
