Plastic surgery is a big business. The American Society of Plastic Surgeon’s (ASPS) [annual report](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2020/plastic-surgery-statistics-full-report-2020.pdf) found that some $20 billion was spent in 2020, with 15.6 million cosmetic procedures and nearly 7 million reconstructive procedures performed. When we speak about the cosmetic end of the spectrum, we are usually dealing with out-of-pocket expenses because the treatments are generally considered elective and not medically necessary. When we talk about the reconstructive side of the industry, however, [health insurance coverage](https://aedit.com/aedition/insurance-coverage-for-plastic-surgery-cosmetic-procedures) may come into play.

In June 1989, the American Medical Association (AMA) adopted definitions of ‘cosmetic surgery’ and ‘reconstructive surgery’ that are used by insurance providers to determine coverage:

- **Cosmetic Surgery**: Performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient’s appearance and self-esteem.
- **Reconstructive Surgery**: Performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease.

If you clicked on this article, it’s probably because you are considering a breast surgery of some kind. So, what does the ‘cosmetic’ versus ‘reconstructive’ distinction mean to you? If you are simply looking to up your cup size, you can pretty much count on paying for your [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions) yourself. But there are certain reasons why breast implants and other enhancement procedures may fall into the ‘reconstructive’ category. Additionally, [breast reduction](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction-and-revision-solutions) is one of the most common procedures insurance might cover.

To better understand what factors into whether or not a [breast surgery](https://aedit.com/concern/breast-shape-and-size) is covered by insurance, we’re breaking down some of the key criteria you need to know to make your case.

## **Why Breast Surgery May Be Covered By Insurance**
The fact of the matter is that there are no guarantees when it comes to insurance coverage. “Nobody knows what will qualify, as there are no guidelines that say, ‘if you have this, you qualify,” says [Richard J. Brown, MD](https://www.richardjbrownmd.com/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Scottsdale, AZ. “It is totally at the discretion of the insurance company.” Even so, there are some circumstances that, with proper documentation, may mean a procedure is eligible for coverage.

### **1. Post-Mastectomy Reconstruction**
Perhaps the most straightforward situation on the list, the 1998 [Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act](https://www.cancer.org/treatment/finding-and-paying-for-treatment/health-insurance-laws/womens-health-and-cancer-rights-act.html) mandated that group health plans that cover [mastectomy](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-to-expect-before-during-after-mastectomy-breast-cancer) (for both breast cancer prevention and treatment) must also cover [breast reconstruction](https://aedit.com/aedition/comprehensive-guide-to-breast-reconstruction-nipple-reconstruction-after-breast-cancer). It should be noted that Medicare covers bilateral breast reconstruction in post-mastectomy patients, too. Reconstruction can be performed in a variety of ways depending on the anatomy and aesthetic goals of the patient, and prostheses (i.e. [breast implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants)) are an option. Whether it is a unilateral or bilateral mastectomy, insurance providers must cover reconstruction for both breasts. 

In these cases, surgeons do not need to document symptoms or trials of alternative treatment. “For breast cancer, I do not have to document, as they already have a diagnosis,” Dr. Brown explains. “If it is for revision reconstruction, I document what I feel I can do to make the reconstruction better, if that is possible.”  

### **2. Shoulder, Neck, & Back Pain**
Anyone that suffers from back, neck, or shoulder pain knows just how debilitating it can be. Whether the pain is attributed to injury, [poor posture](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-improve-your-posture), or breast size, treating the pain can be a challenge. This is especially true if the discomfort is caused by a large chest. [Research](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3322448/) has found a correlation between breast size and chronic back pain, and it is believed it may have to do with the curvature of the spine due to the weight of the breasts. As a result, insurance companies may cover a breast reduction to improve quality of life. 

### **3. Inability to Exercise**
Exercising is challenging enough as is, but, for some women, it is made even more difficult by large breasts. As you move, so do your breasts and that can be very painful while doing high intensity – or even low intensity – workouts. Finding sports bras that are supportive and containing enough may not be possible, with some even doubling up on them. Some women with large breasts are not able to get the health benefits associated with fitness, which can help create the case for a medically necessary breast reduction.  

### **4. Significant Asymmetries**
From head to toe, [asymmetry](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-for-body-asymmetries) is inevitable. No body – literally or figuratively – is perfect, and most females find that their breasts are uneven. For the large majority of people, correcting breast asymmetry is not a medical necessity. But for certain cases of asymmetry as a result of trauma, disease, infection, tumors, or genetic conditions that cause large size discrepancies, there may be a conversation to be had with your insurance company. 

### **5. Rashes** 
Chronic rashes under the breasts can be a reason for insurance to cover a reduction surgery. Because large breasts often droop and cover other areas of the chest, it can cause skin-to-skin friction (intertrigo) and/or make it difficult for sweat to evaporate. In normal circumstances, sweat produced in the inframammary fold (i.e. the breast crease) evaporates on its own, but, for women with larger breasts, the damp environment can cause irritation and rashes. 

### **6. Bra Strap Grooves**
Ever notice indentations on your shoulders when taking off your bra at the end of the day? It’s usually a sign that the undergarment was overburdened or ill-fitting. While this nuisance is usually a once-in-a-while thing for most, some bigger-busted ladies have permanent grooves from their bra straps because the breasts are simply too heavy to be properly supported. Alone, these markings may not be enough of a reason to warrant a reduction, but they can be supporting evidence (pun intended) when building a case. 

### **7. Headaches**
Can large breasts be headache-inducing? According to [research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20048598/), the answer is yes. Studies show a link between chronic headaches and macromastia (large breasts), and women who previously suffered from headaches or migraines reported improved wellbeing post-breast reduction. The exact connection between the two isn’t fully understood, but it is believed that the weight of the breasts can be a stressor to the muscles in the head, just like in the back, neck, and shoulders. 

### **8. Faulty Breast Implants**
Just as insurance companies will cover breast implants for mastectomy patients, they may cover the removal of said implants if it is determined to be medically necessary to do so. ‘Medically necessary’ reasons can include: 

- Implant rupture
- Severe [capsular contracture](https://aedit.com/aedition/capsular-contracture-breast-implants)
- Infection
- Chronic breast pain
- Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma ([BIA-ALCL](https://aedit.com/aedition/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-allergan-breast-implant-recall))

Even for reconstruction patients, coverage for [breast implant removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-implant-removal) or [replacement](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-replacing-breast-implants) is not a given. “Beyond initial reconstruction, insurance is not obligated to cover any breast reconstruction revisions,” Dr. Brown shares. But “the fact of the matter is they pretty much cover it all,” he adds. With that said, insurance companies rarely, if ever, cover revision if the primary surgery was for cosmetic purposes.

## **How to Build a Case for Insurance**
So, how do you get insurance to cover your breast surgery? The reality of the situation is that it takes time and patience. With the exception of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction patients, evidence must be submitted to your insurance provider and pre-authorization must be gained before moving forward with the procedure. Insurance companies aren’t going to just pay for anyone’s breast surgery. In the case of [reduction mammaplasty](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-questions-to-ask-before-a-breast-reduction) (a.k.a. breast reduction), you need documentation that demonstrates why you need the procedure, including some or all of the following:

- **Photography**: Standardized photography of the breasts taken by a medical professional is usually required to visualize the breast hypertrophy, or overgrowth of breast tissue.
- **Symptoms**: Chronic symptoms, like many of those listed above, must be experienced for at least six months (though usually a year or more) before building a case.
- **Alternative Treatment**: Proof of unsuccessful non-surgical treatments, including visits to a physical therapist, chiropractor, or orthopedist, supervised weight loss, or the inability for rashes or other skin conditions to be cleared up by a dermatologist, must be submitted.
- **Surgical Plan**: Your board certified plastic surgeon will need to share the approximate amount of tissue they plan to remove from each breast based on your weight and height. Insurance companies have specific parameters for how much needs to be excised in order for the reduction to be considered medically necessary.
- **Surgeon’s Statement**: Additionally, your medical team will need to share their opinion on why your symptoms are best treated with breast reduction surgery.

Not all health insurance companies will require all of these criteria be met, but, according to a [2020 paper](https://journals.lww.com/plasreconsurg/Abstract/2020/08000/Insurance_Denials_in_Reduction_Mammaplasty__How.6.aspx) published in *Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery*, pre-authorization denial rates for breast reduction surgery have increased steadily over the last five years. The researchers note that the factors for precertification “are used arbitrarily, without scientific evidence, and are inconsistent with clinical practice,” making it difficult for patients and providers alike. 

These discrepancies are why Dr. Brown always tries to manage expectations. As he explains, “neck pain, back pain, bra strap grooves, headaches, rashes under the breast, [and] inability to exercise because they need several bras” are all legitimate reasons to consider breast reduction surgery, but these symptoms “do not guarantee” coverage by insurance. “They still can be denied,” he shares. “And often insurance wants proof of PT [physical therapy] and OT [occupational therapy] to avoid surgery.”

Needless to say, building a case for preauthorization isn’t something you do on your own. Your primary care physician, PT or OT specialists, and board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon will all be part of the process. Dr. Brown’s approach? “I just tell the story,” he notes. “I describe the symptoms, and what is going on, and make comments on whether I feel it is medically necessary or not.” 

In addition to the symptoms described above, insurance providers usually use the controversial [Schnur Sliding Scale](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30557179/) to calculate how much breast tissue should be removed. “[It] is a formula that based on height, weight, and other factors predicts how much they should have removed, and it is so imperfect,” Dr. Brown cautions. “They use that against how much the surgeon says they think they can remove, and, if those numbers are off by too much, they may deny.”  Some insurance companies will also require the surgeon performing the procedure is in-network, so be sure to clear that up early on.

### **Next Steps**
If your breast reduction case gets approved, insurance will cover the cost of the surgery – with some stipulations. You will need a post-operative report that shows the procedure was carried out in accordance with the pre-authorized plan. That includes being operated on by an in-network surgeon at an accredited facility (usually a hospital) and having the mandatory amount of tissue removed.

Unfortunately, there are no ‘sure things’ in insurance, but there are steps you can take to improve your chances of coverage. In addition to careful documentation, one of the best things prospective patients can do is work with a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in the procedure they are interested in. You found out that you need to have a medically necessary procedure. You and your provider have submitted all of your necessary documentation and insurance has approved your case. While you’re not necessarily thrilled about going under the knife, there just so happen to be a few cosmetic tweaks that you’re interested in making to that same part of the body you already scheduled to have surgery on. So, can you blend functional and aesthetic surgeries? We asked the experts.

## **Functional vs. Aesthetic Procedures**
First things first, you may be wondering what the difference is between functional and aesthetic procedures? The best way to understand it is to look at these two definitions from the [American Medical Association (AMA)](https://www.ama-assn.org/): 

- **Cosmetic Surgery**: Performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient’s appearance and self-esteem.
- **Reconstructive Surgery**: Performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease.

Another way to put it? A functional procedure is one that you probably *need* to have, whereas an aesthetic procedure is one that you *want* to have. As you may have guessed, functional procedures are more likely to be [covered by insurance](https://aedit.com/aedition/insurance-coverage-for-plastic-surgery-cosmetic-procedures) than cosmetic ones. 

While it may sound straightforward enough, there is actually quite a bit of gray area. Many procedures have dual purposes and can treat both functional *and* aesthetic concerns. For example, patients who have [trouble breathing](https://aedit.com/concern/breathing-issues) due to a deviated septum (medically necessary) and are also unhappy with the appearance (aesthetic) of their [asymmetrical or crooked nose](https://aedit.com/concern/nose-angle) could address both concerns with the [same rhinoplasty surgery](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-cosmetic-rhinoplasty-vs-functional-rhinoplasty).

## **Blending Functional & Aesthetic Procedures**
Rhinoplasty isn’t the only procedure that has functional and aesthetic benefits though. And, if you are curious as to what other plastic surgery fits the bill, we’re breaking down six of the most common: 

### **1. Rhinoplasty (a.k.a. nose job)** 
While we often think of rhinoplasty as a way to improve the appearance and [shape of the nose](https://aedit.com/concern/nose-shape), it also can help with breathing problems. “It is a very well understood scientific fact that the nose is the primary organ for delivery of oxygen to the body,” explains [Oren Friedman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/oren-friedman-md-1609), a double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and director of facial plastic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. “The nose humidifies, filters, and warms the air we breathe, so that, when the air reaches the lungs, it is primed for gas exchange, allowing for oxygen to reach important functional regions of our bodies and brains.” Needless to say, the proper function of the nose is medically necessary. “It is essential that people be able to breathe through their noses, and, as such, insurance companies should cover surgery to correct a patient's nasal breathing surgery,” he adds.

How does this relate to aesthetic concerns a patient may have? If a patient has a major nasal shape deformity that is directly contributing to their inability to breathe through the nose, the surgeon will correct it as part of the functional rhinoplasty procedure. According to Dr. Friedman, nasal deformities that need to be corrected in order to improve the breathing function include cleft lip nasal deformities, nasal defects following cancer removal, and traumatic defects as with a dog bite.  

### **2. Abdominoplasty (a.k.a. tummy tuck)** 
For patients with a [body mass index (BMI)](https://www.dukehealth.org/treatments/weight-loss-surgery-candidate) of 35 or higher, [weight loss procedures](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-plastic-surgery-after-bariatric-surgery-weight-loss) (e.g. gastric sleeves, lap gastric bands, gastric bypass, etc.) are often covered by insurance. This is especially true if it is coupled with medical complications, like diabetes, heart disease, or pulmonary hypertension. Procedures like an [abdominoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) (to remove [excess fat](https://aedit.com/concern/excess-fat) and skin) and panniculectomy (to address extra skin) may also qualify as medically necessary in certain patients, though it is not as common as the weight loss treatments. 

But complementing a significant weight loss isn’t the only functional benefit of abdominal surgery. “[Body contouring](https://aedit.com/procedure/body-contouring-solutions) procedures such as a tummy tuck often provide much more than aesthetic outcomes and may actually improve function,” explains [Gregory Buford, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/gregory-buford-md-1015), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Englewood, CO. “When we tighten the abdominal muscles, the overall core is made more functionally competent.” 

As a result, he says patients “will often report improvement in chronic back pain” and has also seen patients comment that “bladder function has improved.” While these benefits will probably not qualify the procedure for insurance coverage, Dr. Buford notes that a good number of his tummy tuck patients experience health improvements in addition to the cosmetic benefits. 

### **3. Blepharoplasty (a.k.a. eyelid surgery)** 
Eyelid surgery is another procedure that can be performed for cosmetic or functional reasons — and, in some cases, both. [Lower](https://aedit.com/procedure/lower-eyelid-blepharoplasty-transconjunctival-approach) and [upper eyelid blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/upper-eyelid-blepharoplasty) surgeries can treat loose or sagging skin, under eye bags or puffiness, and eyelid droopiness.

Functionally, a blepharoplasty may be medically necessary when excess skin impedes vision. Dr. Friedman says that when the degree of eyelid droop is so extensive that it obstructs a patient's ability to see, insurance usually covers the eyelid surgery. “Failure to see well is a hazard to the patient and to those around the patient, and, as a result, functional surgery should be performed for health reasons,” he explains. 

If vision is not impaired, don’t expect the procedure to be classified as functional. “At times, patients do not like the heavy appearance of their eyelids and may want to have skin removed from the upper eyelids,” Dr. Friedman notes. “In such cases of cosmetic dissatisfaction, insurance should not cover the procedure.” Depending on the patient’s goals, a blepharoplasty can help with [rejuvenation](https://aedit.com/procedure/eye-rejuvenation-solutions) or [reshaping](https://aedit.com/procedure/eyelid-correction-solutions) the eyes.

### **4. Breast Surgery**
No, your standard [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions) — be it with [implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants), [fat transfer](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-fat-transfer), or some [hybrid](https://aedit.com/aedition/hybrid-breast-augmentation-with-implants-fat-transfer) of the two — is not functional. But breast surgery encompasses a wide range of procedures, some of which are considered medically necessary. Mastectomy, breast reconstruction, and breast reduction are three such treatments. 

As per the [1998 Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA)](https://www.cancer.org/treatment/finding-and-paying-for-treatment/understanding-health-insurance/health-insurance-laws/womens-health-and-cancer-rights-act.html), health insurance plans that cover [mastectomy](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-to-expect-before-during-after-mastectomy-breast-cancer) (whether it’s for breast cancer prevention or treatment) must also cover [breast reconstruction](https://aedit.com/aedition/comprehensive-guide-to-breast-reconstruction-nipple-reconstruction-after-breast-cancer) — in the form of prostheses (like breast implants) — for both breasts. In these cases, providers do not need to document health problems or trials of alternative treatment as is usually custom in insurance cases. 

In the case of [breast reduction](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction-and-revision-solutions), addressing the size of the breasts can have a true impact on the patient’s quality of life. “When we reduce a woman's breasts, our goal is not only to achieve functional improvement (e.g. less weight and, so, less pressure on the lower back and neck) but to also create an aesthetic outcome that is attractive,” Dr. Buford says. “In this sense, breast reduction is likely one of the best examples in plastic surgery where form meets function to achieve an endpoint that creates benefit for our patients on multiple levels.”

### **5. Otoplasty (a.k.a. ear surgery)**
In order to understand the functional benefits of [otoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/otoplasty), it’s important to understand the functional benefits of the outer ear. “The external ear serves the primary function of funneling sound to the middle and inner ear in order to aid in hearing,” Dr. Friedman explains. “Repair of deformities that cause poor hearing should generally be covered by insurance.” 

[Cosmetic ear surgeries](https://aedit.com/aedition/otoplasty-ear-pinning-benefits-for-large-prominent-ears), as you may have guessed, are usually paid for out of pocket. “Aesthetic ear deformities often present as children and adults expressing that their ears protrude from their heads too far, making their ears stand out,” he says. “Patients sometimes come in stating ‘I get bullied for my funny looking ears’ or ‘my ears look like dumbo ears.’” Despite the mental health component to such concerns, Dr. Friedman shares that “otoplasty to correct these types of cosmetic deformities are generally not covered by insurance.”

There are, however, certain exceptions. “At times, children are born with excessively small ears [or] with no identifiable ears at all,” he notes. “These ear deformities require reconstruction of the missing ear and should be covered by insurance.” 

### **6. Botox®**
While it’s not a surgery, we’d be remiss not to mention the therapeutic benefits of a certain cosmetic injectable. As you likely know, [Botox®](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) is a form of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) that is used in aesthetic medicine to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions (think: forehead lines and [crow’s feet](https://aedit.com/procedure/periorbital-botox)). But the neurotoxin is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat medical conditions as well. 

Therapeutic uses for Botox® include the treatment of [migraines](https://americanmigrainefoundation.org/resource-library/botox-for-migraine/), [hyperhidrosis](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-for-hyperhidrosis) (read: excessive sweating), and eye spasms (to name a few). “I treat a good number of patients with Botox® who report additional benefits such as reduced local sweating and an overall reduction in migraines,” Dr. Buford shares. “For these patients, the additional benefits often vastly outweigh the cosmetic improvements and are literally life changing.” In such cases, insurance may cover the cost of routine Botox® treatments.

## **How to Find the Right Provider**
The most important part of any procedure — functional or aesthetic? [Finding the right provider](https://aedit.com/aedition/finding-the-right-plastic-surgeon-dermatologist-or-cosmetic-dentist) to ensure you receive the best and safest treatment for your needs. “Choosing the right surgeon is always the most important predictor of success for a surgical procedure,” Dr. Friedman says. During the research and [consultation](https://aedit.com/aedition/questions-to-ask-your-doctor-during-plastic-surgery-consultation) process, be sure to inquire about how often they perform the procedure(s) you are interested in and ask to see [before and after photos](https://aedit.com/aedition/importance-of-before-and-after-photos-in-plastic-surgery). 

No matter what area you are looking to treat, it is important that the surgeon has extensive knowledge of anatomy and how the body works. “A surgeon who understands the functions of the facial sense organs — the nose, the eyes, the ears — is well suited to safely and comprehensively achieve the best possible surgical outcomes,” Dr. Friedman says. “Knowing the nose, eyes, and ears inside and out allows us to insure success in both form and function.”

Basically, the more communicative you can be about what you’re looking for, the better. “What’s helpful is for the surgeon to know what the patient’s primary goals are,” he says. “That way, the surgeon can keep this in mind when prioritizing recommendations.” 

And don’t be surprised if, when it comes to dollars and cents, you end up talking to a member of the doctor’s team. “Most plastic surgeons, including myself, don’t like to discuss fees with patients because it can interfere with the doctor-patient relationship,” he adds. “Plastic surgeons try to stay focused on the surgical care and, thus, aren’t sure of exact fees. They have staff to help with the accounting.”

### **What about financing options?**
Cosmetic surgery is rarely [covered by insurance](https://aedit.com/aedition/insurance-coverage-for-plastic-surgery-cosmetic-procedures), which means you will likely be paying out of pocket for treatment. The availability of financing options and the frequency at which they are used will vary depending on the provider and practice. As such, it’s a good idea to inquire about what may be available prior to your initial consultation with the doctor. 

“In my practice, I would say less than 5 percent of patients use financing for their procedures,” Dr. Cabin shares. “I personally have a higher threshold to do surgery on someone who is using financing, as I feel that patients using financing are less likely to be making a wise financial decision in pursuing surgery.” At the end of the day, his main objective is to make sure patients feel confident and secure in their decision. “There are certainly many many patients who want to finance a procedure and feel comfortable financially with the commitment,” he notes. “But I always want to be certain that a patient will feel financially secure if they undergo surgery.”

In other practices, the percentage of patients who choose to finance their procedure is higher. New York City-based board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon [Kevin Tehrani, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/kevin-tehrani-md-91), estimates that some 20 to 30 percent of his patients opt for financing options, and he has recently started accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment, too. “Speaking about budget is a good idea, but I do not believe it should be the only way to tailor someone's treatment plan,” Dr. Tehrani says. “Patients should discuss the pros and cons of a procedure and then talk about the budget that can be worked within.” From there, you can decide what is best for you. “The spectrum can be delivered from a high, middle, and low cost, but it’s ultimately what scenario will be the best for the patient,” he adds. 

## **Non-Surgical vs. Surgical: What’s Most Cost-Effective?**
There are two main classifications of aesthetic treatments: surgical and non-surgical. Generally speaking, more invasive procedures carry higher price tags, but they also tend to have [longer-lasting results](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-long-does-it-takes-to-recover-from-cosmetic-surgery-procedures). “Although non-surgical approaches are cheaper, when compared to surgical approaches for the same problems, they can be less effective,” Dr. Cabin says. Another caveat? “Many non-surgical treatments need to be [repeated routinely](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-frequently-to-get-non-surgical-cosmetic-procedures-like-dermal-filler-botox-chemical-peel), and costs can add up over time,” he adds.

### **1. Eyes** 
Even before [COVID-19 face coverings](https://aedit.com/aedition/influence-of-covid-19-face-masks-on-medical-aesthetics-trends) put our collective attention squarely on the [upper third of the face](https://aedit.com/aedition/popularity-of-eyelid-surgery-cosmetic-eye-procedures-during-covid-19), the eyes have always been a cause of cosmetic concerns. While the fat is ultimately placed like an injectable, fat grafting is technically a surgical procedure because it involves harvesting fat from a donor site via liposuction before transferring it to the desired area. In this case, Dr. Ardesh likes to perform a nano-fat transfer where fat is taken from the belly button region before being processed into a fine liquid and injected around the eyes. “This procedure can help with hollows and also improve skin color and quality,” he says.

Unlike hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers that need to be touched up every six to 12 months, fat transfer is permanent after the initial recovery period. For the first three to six months, the fat must become established in its new location, and the body reabsorbs a portion of it (usually about 30 to 50 percent) during that time. As such, providers may suggest a revision down the line to address volume loss.

But fat grafting isn’t the only way to enjoy a long-lasting solution. Dr. Ho recommends [eyelid surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/blepharoplasty-eyelid-surgery), which can easily be combined with a [neck lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/direct-neck-lift) or [facelift](https://aedit.com/procedure/facelift-rhytidectomy/cost). Depending on the patient’s concerns, Dr. Ardesh says the most cost-effective eye rejuvenation procedure may be removing a small amount of lower eyelid skin through surgery. A [lower eyelid blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/blepharoplasty-eyelid-surgery/cost) can be performed as an outpatient procedure in under an hour and correct common age-related eye concerns, like dark circles and bags.

### **2. Lips** 
Whether your concern is [lip shape](https://aedit.com/concern/lip-shape) or size, [lip augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/lip-augmentation-solutions) procedures are consistently among the top-performed in the United States every year. [Temporary lip fillers](https://aedit.com/procedure/temporary-lip-fillers) are the perhaps the most well-known treatment option (check out our guide to what to know before your [first time getting lip filler](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-to-know-before-getting-lip-filler-for-the-first-time)), but fat transfer is an option here as well. “Filler enhancement can be performed in the office during a 20-minute visit and costs about $800,” Dr. Ardesh says, noting that they usually last up to a year. 

[Lip augmentation with fat transfer](https://aedit.com/procedure/lip-augmentation-with-fat-transfer), on the other hand, rings in at about $5,000, he shares, but you can expect permanent results. When you consider that one syringe of filler can cost up to $1,200, fat transfer may prove to be more cost effective. Dr. Ardesh transfers between 10 and 60 milliliters of fat and estimates 50 to 70 percent of it survives. “The benefits of fat transfer include that the fat can also be transferred to other parts of the face that need volume at the same time, like the cheeks, jawline, and temples,” he adds. 

### **3. Chin & Jawline**
Speaking of the jawline, Dr. Ardesh says temporary filler is a popular way to add definition here, too. At about $900 per one milliliter syringe, however, the cost of maintaining those results adds up quickly. In addition to fat transfer, he often recommends a permanent implant to patients looking for [chin and jawline enhancement](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-chin-augmentation-enhancement-procedures). “A chin implant is the equivalent of at least four vials of filler, so the [chin implant surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/alloplastic-chin-implant) can be significantly more cost-effective for about $4,000,” Dr. Ardesh says. Not only can the implant prove to be more budget-friendly in the long term, but it also may yield more satisfactory results. “The chin implant may have better aesthetic outcomes than getting jaw filler injections every year,” he says.

### **4. Neck**

The facility fee is a fixed fee that is set by the hospital or clinic where a procedure is taking place. It includes the cost of nursing care, drugs, medical materials, and procedure-specific items (think: implants) that will be used before, during, and after your treatment. 

It should be noted that the [first time you meet](https://aedit.com/aedition/questions-to-ask-your-doctor-during-plastic-surgery-consultation) with an aesthetic provider, you may pay a consultation fee. Providers set their own consultation fee, and, if a patient chooses to move forward with the procedure, the fee will be applied toward the total cost of it. 

If you have questions or concerns about the cost of a procedure, patients should feel free to have an open dialogue with their provider. They may be able to present different treatment options at varying price points. While not always the case, patients who choose to [combine procedures](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-surgical-and-non-surgical-cosmetic-procedures-to-combine) (think: a facelift and blepharoplasty or tummy tuck and liposuction) sometimes save a bit of money, in addition to maximizing recovery time and enhancing results.

## **Additional Costs to Consider**
Aside from the fees outlined above that relate directly to the procedure itself, there are additional expenses to consider before undergoing a cosmetic treatment or procedure. There are often preoperative and postoperative costs not captured in the surgical, anesthesia, and facility fees. These, too, vary by procedure type, but fall into the following categories: 

### **Pre-Operative Care**
Cosmetic surgery patients who will be placed under general anesthesia will likely be required to [seek clearance](https://aedit.com/aedition/why-you-should-lose-weight-before-plastic-surgery) from their primary care physician prior to surgery. This can include a chest x-ray, EKG, and basic blood work. These tests are carried out to spot any pre-existing conditions that would make the procedure more risky. There may be separate fees involved for each of these workups, so it’s worth inquiring about what tests will be required before you schedule your procedure. That way, you can price them out and budget accordingly.

### **Travel Expenses**
If you are considering having a procedure with a provider who is not located nearby, you will want to explore the [cost of traveling](https://aedit.com/aedition/safety-risks-of-medical-tourism-traveling-abroad-for-plastic-surgery) (both transportation and accommodations) to and from the facility. In addition to arriving in plenty of time before procedure day, you may need to stay close for days or weeks after the procedure to monitor healing. ### **Recovery Care**
Follow-up appointments and post-operative care may be needed in the days and weeks following a procedure. It can include pain management, removing sutures, and changing dressings, and it’s worth checking what is or is not included in your initial quote to avoid any unexpected fees. Additionally, you may want to invest in pillows, garments, or other items to make your [recovery more comfortable,](https://aedit.com/aedition/preparing-for-a-smooth-recovery-from-plastic-surgery) all of which come at an additional cost.

While [recovering](https://aedit.com/aedition/category/recovery) under the watchful eye of medical professionals is usually unnecessary (though some procedures may require overnight observation), many providers offer concierge services. For a separate fee, you may be able to stay in a recovery center or receive regular nursing care for the first few days of healing. Even if you choose to forgo additional care, be sure to consider the financial impact of your downtime and recovery. Depending on the procedure, you may need to take time off from work, arrange child care, and/or have a friend or loved one stay with you.

When it comes to the cost of cosmetic surgery, the only constant is that there aren't many. While patients can expect to pay surgical, anesthesia, and facility fees, just how much those will be depends on the procedure, provider, and location. According to the [American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/news/press-releases/americans-spent-more-than-16-billion-on-cosmetic-plastic-surgery-in-2018), Americans spent some $16.5 million on cosmetic surgery and minimally invasive procedures in 2018 alone, and it is safe to say a good portion of that figure was an out-of-pocket expenditure for patients. With national cost averages ranging from $3,800 for a breast augmentation to upwards of $8,000 for a facelift, cosmetic surgery is no small expense and most treatments (surgical or otherwise) are not covered by health insurance.

That's not to say there aren’t exceptions to the rule. While elective procedures that are purely cosmetic in nature will always operate (pun intended) outside the realm of insurance companies, plastic surgery procedures that can be classified as 'medically necessary' are often part of insurance policies.

So, what makes an invasive or non-invasive procedure medically necessary and, therefore, covered by a health insurance plan? The AEDITION breaks it down.

## **What Makes a Procedure 'Medically Necessary'**
In June 1989, the [American Medical Association (AMA)](https://www.ama-assn.org/) adopted the following definitions of ‘cosmetic surgery’ and ‘reconstructive surgery’ that are used by health insurance companies to determine coverage.

- **Cosmetic Surgery**: Performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient’s appearance and self-esteem. 
- **Reconstructive Surgery**: Performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease.

In theory, the definitions are black and white: cosmetic procedures are not medically necessary; plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures are. In reality, there is quite a bit of gray area. Many procedures have a dual purpose that treats both an aesthetic concern *and* a functional health problem. If the provider can document the medically necessary component of the procedure and any non-surgical remediation that was previously taken to correct the health issue, Medicare or private insurance may very well cover the cost.

## **What Procedures May Be Covered By Insurance**
In order to successfully document the medical necessity of a procedure, providers must prove the surgery the patient is interested in directly addresses the quality of life concern(s) surrounding the body part or health problem in question. This process involves: 

1. Submitting photographic evidence (not just a written explanation) to the insurance company
2. Proving non-surgical or non-procedure remedies have already been explored 

While the exact standards may vary by insurance company, the [ASPS offers a recommended criteria](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/for-medical-professionals/health-policy/recommended-insurance-coverage-criteria) for distinguishing between a cosmetic surgery procedure and a plastic or reconstructive surgery that providers can use when explaining treatments that have a dual aesthetic and functional purpose. But what does that mean in layman's terms? Below is a guide to surgical and non-surgical procedures that sometimes qualify for insurance coverage. 

### **Abdominoplasty (a.k.a Tummy Tuck) & Panniculectomy** 
Weight loss procedures (think: gastric sleeves, lap gastric bands, and gastric bypass) are often covered by insurance for patients who have a high body mass index (BMI) coupled with comorbidities like heart disease or type 2 diabetes. In the [aftermath of a major weight loss](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-plastic-surgery-after-bariatric-surgery-weight-loss), there are a few cosmetic surgeries that may be considered functional procedures in order to improve a patient's quality of life:

- **Abdominoplasty**: A tummy tuck typically combines fat removal (i.e. liposuction) with skin removal and/or tightening, which may be required by patients in the aftermath of losing a significant amount of weight.
- **Panniculectomy**: The surgical procedure removes excess skin on patients who have lost a significant amount of weight (naturally or via a bariatric procedure).

While insurance coverage of a panniculectomy or [tummy tuck](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) is not as common as weight loss surgery, they may be deemed medically necessary if a patient is in pain, unable to participate in normal activities, or at risk of developing a skin condition.

### **Blepharoplasty (a.k.a. Eyelid Surgery)**
Aging eyelids don't just cause cosmetic concerns, drooping eyelids have the ability to impair vision. For patients who are dealing with poor eyesight as a result of sagging skin around the eyes, an [upper eyelid blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/upper-eyelid-blepharoplasty) may be deemed medically necessary to correct the problem. During the surgery, a plastic or oculoplastic surgeon will remove excess skin to lift and open the eye. While many insurance policies will cover the functional component of the surgery, additional cosmetic improvements may need to be paid for out of pocket. It should also be noted that [lower eyelid blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/lower-eyelid-blepharoplasty-transconjunctival-approach) is more difficult to classify as a functional procedure.

### **Botox®** 
No, [neurotoxin injections](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin) to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles are not going to be covered by your insurance company, but there are therapeutic uses for Botox® that may be. In 2010, Botox® was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat chronic migraine in patients over the age of 18. When injected around the pain fibers that are involved in headaches, Botox® blocks the release of chemicals involved in pain transmission. The FDA-recommended dosage is 155 units (administered every 10 to 12 weeks) for migraine patients, and the treatment is covered by most insurance plans (including Medicare and Medicaid).

### **Breast Surgery**
As you can probably guess, a [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants) to cosmetically enhance the size or shape of the chest isn't going to be covered by health insurance plans, but certain kinds of breast surgery can be considered medically necessary:

- **Post-Mastectomy Breast Reconstruction**: As per the [1998 Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA)](https://www.cancer.org/treatment/finding-and-paying-for-treatment/understanding-health-insurance/health-insurance-laws/womens-health-and-cancer-rights-act.html), group health plans that cover mastectomy (be it for breast cancer prevention or treatment) must also cover [breast reconstruction](https://aedit.com/aedition/comprehensive-guide-to-breast-reconstruction-nipple-reconstruction-after-breast-cancer) — in the form of prostheses (like breast implants) — and other procedures for both breasts. In such cases, providers do not need to document health problems or trials of alternative treatment. Medicare also covers bilateral breast reconstruction in post-mastectomy patients.
- **Reduction Mammoplasty (a.k.a. Breast Reduction)**: Women with symptomatic macromastia (large breasts) may deal with neck, nerve, shoulder, and back pain, breast discomfort, an inability to engage in certain activities, and/or dermatitis or rashes beneath the breasts secondary to the condition. In such cases, a [breast reduction surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction) may be covered by insurance after six to 12 months (on average) of documentation is presented to show alternative treatments (think: visits to a physical therapist, chiropractor, or orthopedist) were unsuccessful.

It should be noted that [gynecomastia surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/male-breast-reduction) (a.k.a. male breast reduction) is much more difficult to classify as a functional procedure than reduction mammoplasty for women — though the ASPS has compiled a [set of guidelines](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/Documents/Health-Policy/Positions/Gynecomastia_ICC.pdf) that encompasses pain and discomfort, suspected malignancy, and more and can be used for evaluating insurance coverage for both adolescents and adults.

### **Otoplasty (a.k.a. Ear Surgery)**
Otoplasty can be used to improve or correct the shape, proportion, and/or position of the ear. Such surgical procedures are performed in children and adults alike, and an [ear surgery](https://aedit.com/procedure/otoplasty) may be covered by health insurance if a provider is able to provide one of the following:

1. Document a medical problem (like hearing loss) caused by abnormal shaped ears
2. Document that the ear deformity is from a congenital abnormality

Unlike other procedures that require doctors also show the patient participated in a trial of alternative treatments, patients with a congenital abnormality of the ear do not need to first experiment with non-surgical remedies. 

### **Rhinoplasty (a.k.a Nose Job)**
Just as you probably have a friend who 'wanted' a nose job, you likely know someone who 'needed' a rhinoplasty. Difficulty breathing, nose bleeds, and sinus problems are just a few of the [health concerns that can lead a patient to need nose surgery](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-cosmetic-rhinoplasty-vs-functional-rhinoplasty). After proving that non-invasive alternatives (like nasal spray) are ineffective, insurance may cover some or all of the procedure.

Medically speaking, the surgical procedure that corrects a deviated septum (one common cause of breathing issues) is known as a septoplasty and only addresses the inner workings of the nose. This procedure, which is almost always covered by insurance, has no bearing on the appearance of the nose. In some cases, a rhinoplasty that improves the shape or aesthetic of the external nose structure can be deemed medically necessary. Otherwise, patients who wish to make cosmetic changes (in addition to the functional improvements) may need to pay for that portion out of pocket.

## **The Takeaway**
Needless to say, there are many subtle intricacies that determine whether a procedure is deemed ‘cosmetic’ or ‘plastic and reconstructive.’ That distinction, however, plays a direct role in why it may or may not be covered by insurance. Is A Cosmetic Procedure Ever Covered By Insurance?

Cosmetic surgery is always evolving to accommodate changing beauty trends and demands from the latest generation of customers. A combination of medical advancements and growing social acceptance of cosmetic treatments has resulted in more non-invasive treatments, which are ideal for those who would rather not go under the knife.

Non-invasive cosmetic procedures cause minimal discomfort compared to invasive surgical procedures, such as [body contouring](https://aedit.com/procedure/smoothshapes) and [breast augmentations](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants) among others, and they typically have little to no recovery time. This allows patients to get back to everyday life almost immediately. The health risks of non-invasive treatments are also much lower than those posed by surgery (such as an infection, a potential reaction to anesthetic, and scarring), and they often have minimal side effects. Perhaps the most attractive aspect to most people is that, individually, non-invasive treatments have a much lower price tag since they don’t require the expense of anesthetic or additional surgical fees.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), nearly all invasive surgical procedures in the US cost well over $3,000. However, it is possible to enjoy non-invasive treatments at a fraction of that cost, even for $500 or less, which makes them increasingly popular options.

We spoke to [Wendy W. Lee, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/wendy-lee-md-1607), Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Dermatology at the Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Practice in Miami, about the most affordable treatments available across the U.S. “Single-area botulinum toxin injections, chemical peels, some eyelid tightening, and skincare are typically the most inexpensive procedures available on the market today,” she says. 

## **Botulinum Toxin (Botox®)**
This type of bacterial toxin, used to treat wrinkles, is easily the most well-known non-invasive procedure today. According to the ASPS, over seven million people got [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial) treatments in 2017, a 819 percent increase since 2000. The toxin has the ability to inhibit signals between nerves and muscles, which means it is highly effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by natural muscle contractions under the skin. The most common brands of botulinum toxin type A are Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau® (read our guide to neurotoxins [HERE](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-neurotoxin-botulinum-type-a-injections-botox-dysport-jeuveau-xeomin)).

These injections are incredibly popular for clients wishing to fight the signs of aging. By relaxing the facial muscles, Botox® and other forms for botulinum toxin help create a smooth and youthful visage by reducing the appearance of wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

According to the ASPS, one session of botulinum toxin injections in the US costs an average of $385. The actual price varies, depending on the amount of treatment needed, your provider, and which area you’re hoping to tackle. The entire procedure usually takes as little as 15 to 20 minutes (so quick you can do it in your lunch hour!), and there are few risks involved. The treatment takes effect after about a week and there is little to no recovery time, except for possible tenderness and redness to the injected area. 

## **Chemical Peels**
Another popular [non-invasive procedure](https://aedit.com/aedition/8-non-invasive-cosmetic-treatments-that-save-you-time) that has enjoyed a surge of popularity in recent years is the chemical peel. The procedure involves the application of a [chemical solution](https://aedit.com/aedition/chemical-peel-vs-laser-treatment-what-is-best-for-your-skin) designed to strip away layers of dead skin cells, leaving the skin refreshed, smooth, and with reduced signs of aging. 

Generally, a chemical peel is performed on facial skin, however, it can also be used on other areas, including the neck, décolletage, and hands. Chemical peels can also be used to treat skin that is scarred by acne or suffering from sun damage and it can help tighten loose or sagging skin. There are three levels of the chemical peel, [light](https://aedit.com/procedure/superficial-chemical-peels), [medium](https://aedit.com/procedure/medium-depth-chemical-peels), and [deep](https://aedit.com/procedure/deep-chemical-peels), and which one you choose depends on the extent of treatment you desire.

A light chemical peel has the effect of a deep cleanse, a medium peel will see layers of dead skin peel away over the following few days, and a deep peel is used with a local anesthetic before a chemical called [phenol](https://aedit.com/procedure/phenol-peel) is brushed over the skin and sealed in with an ointment. The latter is generally used for issues such as acne scarring or for those who want a one-off treatment with lasting effects. A light peel will have minimal signs of redness and swelling; a deep peel may take up to three months to fully heal.

Chemical peels are considered one of the most cost-effective forms of cosmetic treatment on the market. The overall price usually includes the cost of the procedure itself, the anesthetic (if applicable), plus any prescriptions needed following the treatment. According to the ASPS, the average cost of a chemical peel is $698, but this number accounts for all levels of peel from light to deep. The average light chemical peel costs less than $500.

## **Eyelid Tightening**
As Dr. Lee noted, another popular non-invasive treatment is eyelid tightening, which can be done using a range of different non-surgical methods. Eyelids can be one of the first areas of the face to show signs of aging and cosmetic procedures are frequently used to treat these signs, whether it’s removing under-eye bags, pinning back dropping lids, or tightening the skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and crow’s feet. The ASPS recommends two different methods for non-invasive eyelid tightening: microdermabrasion, and dermal fillers.

[Microdermabrasion](https://aedit.com/procedure/crystal-microdermabrasion) uses a small abrasion instrument to gently sand away the outer layer of the skin’s surface and can be done around the eye area with care to create a smoother, tighter, and more youthful look. The average price of this treatment is $137, although this number does not necessarily cover the cost of related expenses such as additional prescription medication (if needed).

[Dermal fillers](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers) are another popular non-surgical option for those who want a lift in the eyelid area. Fillers can be used to smooth uneven skin, stimulate collagen production, even skin tone, reduce age spots, and create a firmer, more youthful-looking complexion and skin texture. There are several types of dermal filler and which one you choose depends on the area you are getting treated. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid, such as Juvederm® and Restylane®, or calcium hydroxylapatite, as found in Radiesse®, are particularly effective in dealing with eyelid-related issues. Both cost an average of $670, although it is possible to find practices doing it for $500 or less. It all depends on how much is used and which areas are treated.

## **Are Non-Invasive Treatments More Cost-Effective Than Invasive Surgery?**
Non-invasive treatments offer “less downtime, no operation room time (so there is less risk involved), and they are less expensive per treatment,” says Dr. Lee. Expense is a key factor for many patients looking to enhance their look. Non-invasive treatments are less of a health risk, but also less of a financial risk, so even those with a lower budget can participate.

But the price tag per treatment can be misleading. “Yes, they are cheaper than invasive surgery but long term, probably not,” says Dr. Lee. The issue is the longevity of these treatments, as none of them are permanent, and many patients will need to return for further treatments in the future. This can add up to thousands of dollars over time. 

When considering a treatment, if the cost is an important factor for you, it’s worth looking at the overall expense of repeat non-invasive treatments and comparing them with invasive alternatives. Be aware of both the risks and the longevity of each treatment before you hand over your money, so you know you’re getting exactly what you want from your practitioner.

The Most Affordable Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures

As cosmetic surgery gains awareness and popularity, it’s no longer the sole privilege of the rich and famous. Now the average person can afford it too. There are more opportunities for the everyday person to get cosmetic procedures, but procedure prices can still vary wildly.

When a patient is seeking to change their appearance, there are two types of cosmetic procedures available to them: invasive and non-invasive. Invasive surgical procedures have a higher initial price tag, but that’s not the whole story according to Beverly Hills plastic surgeon [Walt Sweeney, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/walter-sweeney-md-1088). “In general, the cost of non-invasive procedures can be very misleading,” he says. “I have seen patients that have spent $6,000 to $10,000 on filler in the span of several months, only to realize that the results would not replace those of a [facelift](https://aedit.com/procedure/deep-plane-facelift)”.

“If someone is unable to embrace invasive treatment either psychologically or because their health will not allow it, then non-invasive treatments are a great option,” he continues. “However, if a patient is looking for a meaningful change, then non-invasive procedures may leave them wanting more from a monetary and results perspective."

The Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) [report on the real median income in 2017](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEHOINUSA672N) shows that the average US household earns $62 a year, and According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), all the most popular procedures (which include [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-fat-transfer), [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/tumescent-liposuction), [rhinoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/closed-rhinoplasty), and [tummy tucks](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty)) all have an average cost of over $3,000. This means that the cost of many surgical procedures would account for over five percent of the average American's annual income and might not be affordable for most people. However, there are still some options available to even those on limited budgets.

## **A New Wave of Affordable Procedures**
“Aesthetic surgery has become more affordable in the last decade," says Dr. Sweeney. "This is secondary to multiple factors, including provider competition, broader public appeal, and the impact of social media. People see celebrities, musicians, models, and social media personalities being so open about cosmetic procedures." Now people not only look for board certified providers while researching, but also to look for price deals. "This incentivizes aesthetic providers to give deals in the hopes of attracting these people," he says.

As a result, it’s now much easier to find providers offering invasive procedures at a more affordable price. Here are some of the most affordable surgical procedures, which typically cost less than $3,000, accounting for the procedure price, surgeon’s fee, and any related costs.

## **Breast Lifts and Implant Removal**
The most expensive type of breast surgery involves silicone implants, but other types of work are considerably cheaper. Breast surgery under $3,000 includes breast lifts and reconstructive surgery to fix previously botched breast augmentations. 

[Breast lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-lift) have risen in popularity over the past decade. The aim of a breast lift is to improve the shape and appearance of the breasts in a natural way, rather than making them bigger using implants. According to the ASPS, a breast lift, or mastopexy, can have instant results and the healing process takes only a few weeks with one week of minimal discomfort (compared with up to a month with traditional implants). 

If you’ve had a previous breast implant procedure that you’re no longer happy with, plastic surgeons can address that too. If you want your breast implants to be removed, this will set you back approximately $2,400 – over a grand cheaper than having them put in.

## **Eyelid Surgery**
Eyelid surgery, or (a.k.a. [blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/upper-eyelid-blepharoplasty)), is especially popular among those hoping to address signs of aging and is one of the most affordable types of invasive plastic surgery procedures available on the market today. The treatment plan varies from patient to patient, but generally the aim is to lift and rejuvenate eyelid skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Eyelid surgery can be performed on the top or bottom eyelid or both at the same time. It involves removing deposits which cause the eyes to appear aged, including bags under the eyes, and sagging skin on the upper lid. 

The healing process is fairly straightforward. Most patients will be fully healed within two weeks, especially if they follow their post-surgery plan exactly. Eyelid surgery can also be done at the same time as other similar procedures such as the brow lift.

According to the ASPS, blepharoplasty costs an average of $3,026, making it one of the most affordable procedures available on the market today. 

## **Lip Implants**
Another popular (and affordable) [cosmetic procedure is lip implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/lip-implants), which are used to create fuller, more traditionally feminine lips.
